The problem with depression is that it stops you from being able to do things that make up who you are; the things that form your identity. After being depressed for too long you've almost forgotten who you are, and when, eventually, you're able to fight your way out of the depths, you face an inevitable identity crises. You haven't been you for so long that you don't exist anymore. Then there is no energy left to fight when the strangling arms pull you back into the abyss.
