The Thief

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
The beeping monitor verifying life
Somebody's mother, somebody's daughter
Somebody's wife
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
Patient's family losing patience with anger seemingly the only present stage of grief
Compartmentalizing emotion to stave off the icy cold hand of the thief
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
Sound of the sirens warped by the speed is nothing compared to the deafening silence between each beep
The anxiety Interrupted only by the fleeting relief of hearing the next life confirming beat.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
Pushing meds faster than big pharma but losing ground to the inevitable grip of death
My stomach sinks like an anchor into the depths as watch her take her very last breath
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
Sometimes not fast enough

Skynard told me, when I was young
To live my life but to live a simple one
Lord knows I've tried but I took a different road
Life can be a mess or beauty can take your breath
But I've had to carry a heavy load
Simple livin just ain't that simple
Easy livings just not for me
I've had to fight, run, steal and swindle
My dogs barking up a different tree

They say not to judge a book by it's cover
But with me you will discover
What you see is what you get
So run away with me lover
We got a lot of ground to cover
We can be on the horizon before you even ash that cigarette

I live in shades of grey not always black and white
Even stars reflect day in the dead of the night
Im the type of man that's gotta know what's behind every closed door
I don't have a plan I just always find myself searching for more
Hit the road with me babe and let's go and find out
Leave this small town and learn what life is all about

They say not to judge a book by it's cover
But with me you will discover
What you see is what you get
So run away with me lover
We got a lot of ground to cover
We can be on the horizon before you even ash that cigarette

Take my hand babe and follow my lead
On the open road slow just ain't my speed
We'll slash ourselves a brand new path
Just keep on driving til we're out of gas
Well go see shit ain't nobody seen
We'll hold back smiles so we can try to look mean
Then we'll laugh at ourselves in some shitty motels
Surviving on nothing but smokes and caffeine

They say not to judge a book by it's cover

Untitled

Sitting down to write a poem with a blank slate at my hand,
I do not think of traveling or of some foreign land,
I never jot down happy thoughts of flowers and blue sky,
To think of all the good times I really have to try,
When I am sitting with my mind and just the two of us are there,
There's the underlying sense of anxiety and despair,
I push the thoughts of peace and love to the front end of my mind,
But whenever there are good thoughts the bad aren't far behind,
I make a conscious effort everyday when I wake up,
To always see half full when I'm looking at the cup,
There will always be some bad days but some great ones there to follow,
As long as I get out of bed and remember not to wallow,
Today the sun is shining brightly and the air is crisp and clean,
So I'm going to put this pen down and find myself a different scene,
I plan to walk amongst the flowers and think of the good times,
To have the sense of presence to hear the church bell's chimes,
Living in the moment is the only antidote,
When it's just you and your mind and feel surrounded by a moat,
Your presence and the now is your only bridge to land,
So I'm putting this pen down with the blank slate at my hand.
