My Soldier

My soldier, my lover, my hero and best friend. I watch the night terrors haunt you to no end. You kick and scream , you don't know that it's me. I suffer with you as you have these dreams. You fought for my freedom, yet you are prisoner to what you've seen. The damage is done, now your body is unclean. Exposed to poisons, so that I can walk free. My soldier, I thank you, you have helped me see. When the bomb went off, you only lost your eye. I am so thankful that it was not your time to die. Where would I be without you by my side? My soldier, you are safe now, let go of your pride. You have lost several brothers to suicide. Trained to be the best, but the pain you cannot hide. Take my hand as we face life together. My soldier, with you, I can withstand any weather. Let me fight for you this time. I will never let harm come near you and I.

Overcome

It's not my imagination, the tribulation surrounding me. Everyday's a struggle, to hustle, necessity. But, who are they to judge who I am and where I'm from? I am who I am, until the day of kingdom come. And, this vision of prison will never be my home. There is no escape. So crowded, yet alone. But, my freedom is near. Picture perfectly clear. Look into my eyes, you will see no fear. My chin's up, shoulders back, standing strong with no slack. Got to keep pressing forward with the wind at my back. "Count time, pill line, get in compliance". Defiance is my only reliance to keep from being institutionalized, and hypnotized. Tic toc, the clock is ticking right before my eyes. And, im focused on the prize. Never leaving my sight. Miracles in progress. Dreams are taking flight. Everyday's a must, sleeping on a bed of rust. But, im about to leave them kicking rocks while they bite my dust. Its a dog eat dog world, in this place i call hell. But, all dogs go to Heaven, you cant keep em down.

Stepping Through Time

Dear Grandmother (subtitle)
This poem is for you, dear Grandmother, whom I love with all my heart. I loved you when we were together, and even more when we were apart. I never had the chance to tell you, just how you inspired me. You were loved by everyone you met, and never cowardly. If I could be half the woman you were in your lifetime, I would consider it an honor to be able to walk that perfect line. So talented in everything you did. You held your head up high. That's how we know that you're in Heaven, dancing in the sky. Your children and grandchildren, have peace in our hearts. Because we understand, dear grandmother, this is the best part. When the golden gates of heaven opened, there your husband stood. He's waited many years for you to come, because he knew you would. As he takes your hand and spins you around, your spirits become young again. Then you see your sister as well, dancing like the wind. Everyone is here now, that you have loved and lost before. We know that you are happy now and that you will hurt no more. So, goodbye to your mind and body. Your spirit is set free. I will see your face again one day, when those gates are opened for me.
