Waiting To Exhale

What I knew before birth
  I will know after death

This slight pause called life
—where the soul takes a breath

As I Ask ---

If I tell you everything ...
how much of everything
are you willing to know

If I give you everything ...
how much of everything
are you willing to take

If I promise you anything ...
how much of my promise
are you willing to keep

As I ask you for one thing ...
but how much of that one thing
— are you willing to give

The Fruit Without the Tree

Empowering the indolent,
  the fox is now inside

The vermin on the loose,
the truth now plagued by lies

The takers stalk the givers,
those on the dole now scream

“We want what you have worked for,
 —the fruit without the tree”

A Wish Unfulfilled

I came to your hospice,
  I came here to die

I came for my family
  a final goodbye

I broke that one promise,
  I most wanted to keep

Alone on my mountain,
  no mourners to weep

The doctors and nurses,
  they prod and they poke

Their intentions most noble,
  my spirit on dope

In the night, strangers faces
  call out my name

And act like they know me
  new pawn in the game

If I had that one wish
  still left unfulfilled

I would walk to the rim
  of the Canyon so still

At dawn I would jump
  with both arms open wide

Saying: Thank you Dear Lord
 —for a wonderful ride

The Wings of An Angel

God is a poet,
 his blessings in rhyme

Salvation unmetered,
  inspiration divine

His voice calls us inward,
  temptation now gone

Where the wings of an Angel,
  carry words into song

Approaching Storm

The graves have been dug
all bugles away
Medals awarded
for valor displayed

The soldiers in transit
to homes once so dear
But where is the peace
—when gunfire you hear

The Seasons Uncouple

There’s comfort in knowing,
things come and they go

As the wind brings a newness,
whether lilac or snow

There’s joy in all laughter,
given freely and new

And music in the words,
chosen only by you

There’s a time to be born,
and a time then to die

An ending beginning,
a final stop on your ride

What was right at the start,
truer still at the end

And that angel before you,
now the angel within

With deaths only offer,
…one last memory to choose

As the seasons uncouple,
—and your world again new

If-Then

If Art …
is our connection to the senses

Then Poetry …
is our connection to the soul

Last Orphan of the Truth

In the middle—the center,
  a bullseye did hide

Its heart bleeding red,
  to target the lies

It cried out for justice,
  it cried out in pain

Until an arrow struck deeply,
  truth firmly ingrained

Its point forced its power,
 its shaft driving home

A message of hope,
 into falsehood atoned

And deep in your memory,
  a last orphan screams

Renamed in the vengeance,
—rebirthed in this dream

Captive of Love

What the heart holds captive,
—the mind will never free
