Porchlight

Time has left her sitting there
swinging in the August air
and loving him who is not there,
"Tomorrow, tomorrow"

Der Flug Nach Deutschland

Boston is for leaving.
Torgau is for brothers
Weimar is for mourners.
Dresden is for lovers.

Leipzig is for players.
Meissen is for Sisyphus.
Frankfurt is for patience.
Berlin is for the two of us.

Ride the bus down,
board the flight across the earth.
fly "der Flug nach Deutschland"
and hold on for what it's worth.

Pawn To Queen

he's with his prom queen
but what he doesn't know
is that she's the prom queen
that's really just a pawn
she's just a pawn
that's gotten around more

long live the king
hope he pawns off his queen
when she reaches the other team
and finds herself checkmate

Mama Knows Better

I suppose,
that one more day
and one more apple
could shrink it away.

But, I also suppose
if I say one more prayer
it will disappear
and won't be there.

I guess I suppose
doctors know what to do
so I can get better
when surgery is through.

But Mama knows better,
or I suppose she might,
when she works a double shift
to pay for my fight.

Big Now

"Don't you spin your little head about it."
"But mama look at my face;
it's big now mama"

"Now don't be crying about it, Senny.
"But Papa I can't sleep.
What if I don't get better?"

"Why you shaking' honey?
It'll only take a sec;
a couple of molars."

"You'll be fine in a couple of days."
"But mama look at my face;
its so big now"

Soldier

amazing
how a man can stand so proud
amongst the rubble
and the snow
with eyes so pained
in boots that won't shine anymore

But Movies Can Rewind

I can't go to the movies anymore
that one time we were together
that other time that we weren't
but you reminded me how you were

several seats back
you sat with your drink
your drink that you brought in your pocket
and you laughed so hard
at all the funny parts

and you told him about how
once last summer we came here together
"we saw a movie remember"
and i remembered
the movie, the car ride
how we almost kissed

and how your breath stank that last night
that night you reminded me
of all those other nights
that you'd say something similar
that you'd get too close

but i cant go to those movies anymore
because you can't remember
because you know all too well
because lines were crossed
while cars still whizzed by
