Where I'M From

“Where I’m From”
I am from pliers
from Tylenol and vanilla bean perfume.
I am from the budding rose bush,
	the aloe vera plant
	whose salve heals my burns.
I am from the tee-ball bat in the garage
the ballet bar in the studio.
I am from princess pajamas and my favorite stuffed animal
from sandy beaches and mountain views.
I’m from lessons learned and the hard way,
from spankings and timeouts in my bedroom.
I’m from wood flooring and hazel eyes
	and southern cooking grandmothers.
I’m from the brewing of sweet tea and
	the individual stitches on quilts.

From the “no no’s” and
the land flowing with “milk and honey.”
I’m from early Sunday mornings,
in a polk-a-dot dress and black patent shoes.
I’m from the foothills,
green beans and heavily buttered cornbread.
From the crown and sash of Miss Catawba Valley
the receding hairline of my father.
They are on the top shelf in my closet
a box of baby pictures and birthday cards.
It holds my memories, so that I may never forget
Where I’m from.

Traffic Light

Traffic Light

An empty city street, late at night
There’s nothing but a traffic light

Turning red to green to yellow to red
An endless cycle going on in our heads.

There are four directions that you may choose
You have no guidance, don’t look for the cues

You are on your own now, make a decision
Time is running out, you need a position.

In life, we are too rushed, like we are at a light.
We wait and wait until the time is right

Until our once enough time has run out,
And we are stuck at the beginning overwhelmed with doubt.

But I would rather wait for the perfect turn
Than rush into a decision and crash a burn.

Lays Potato Chips

My mom left me home alone
With nothing there to eat
So I took the bag of Lays Potato Chips
And decided to take a seat.

I wasn't too hungry,
I had just eaten cake
But this was an opportunity
I had to take.

I ate until my stomach hurt.
Everything grew tight, including my shirt.

The bag was empty, finally
But there was something wrong
I was still hungry!

More Than 10 Things

I hate the way you run

I hate the way you cry
I hate what you’ve become
So quiet and so shy

I hate the way you speak
Especially when you don’t
It makes you seem so weak
So tell me why you won’t

I hate the way you hang
I hate the way you sway
I hate the way you sang
And took no one’s breath away

I hate the way you look
All the edges and the curves
How you look in all the books
The likes you don’t deserve

I hate the way you try
And nothing goes your way
I hate the way you say goodbye
When I wished that you could stay

I hate the bumps on your face
That you cover with foundation
You think there’s not a trace
Of all your imperfections

But I loathe
The way you love
And get nothing in return
When people touch and shove
Your heart and watch it burn

I hate the way you smile
With the crinkles by your eyes
He stares for just a while
And begins telling lies

I hate the way you’ve heard
I love you and I’ll never leave
Your emotions he always stirred
And you always believed

I hate the way you’re perfect
You do nothing wrong
But his actions show you’re not worth it
He played you all along

I Am

"I Am"

I am in independent woman who loves to dream
I touch to finish line and know that I am strong
I see a shining light at the end of the tunnel
I am an independent woman who loves to dream

I understand the frustration of expectations
I worry that I disappoint those who believe in me
I hope to never lose myself
I am an independent woman who loves to dream

Unsure

“Unsure”

To sing and not know the lyrics
To dance and not know the steps
To write and not know the words
To start but not know where to begin
To run and forget how to step
To forget and then suddenly remember
To admire from afar but never possess
To know the answer and still ask questions
To know right and perform wrong
To light a fire then burn it out
To know but still be unsure
To love and lose
To break and stay broken
Or to break and build again
To dream and it never happens
To be perfect and still have a million flaws
To throw it out and rediscover
To be you but be someone else

Why I Will Not Get Out of Bed

Why I Will Not Get Out of Bed
My alarm clock went off at 7:30.
We were on a two hour delay, no need to hurry.

My stomach was growling due to an intense hunger,
But, I was exhausted! I needed my slumber!

I peeked through my window, hoping to see the snow.
The sight was disappointing, I hung my head low.
The atmosphere around me was warm and comforting,
“How long can I stay here in my bed?” my mind was wondering.

I was slowly drifting back to sleep,
When my alarm sounded again with a large BEEP!

It was a reminder that I would soon have to depart
From my cozy bed and my day must start.

My feet began to touch the floor,
When the sheets grabbed me back for more.

I could feel the dizziness in my head.
I heard the sheets calling, and they said

“Hey, please don’t go away.
I’m getting rather lonely, I want you to stay.”

I refused the invitation, though it seemed exciting.
I began my day, now I’m here typing.

Love Is a Tree

Love is like a tree, growing tall and strong
Until winter comes and all the progress is gone.

We planted a seed, expecting a great something
But you cut it down and now I have nothing.

My hands are clean since you aren't with me.
This naked tree is all I'll ever be.

But winter always ends and spring always comes shining
My once barren limbs are showing flowers, I'm blossoming.

What Do Girls Want

What do girls want?
Girls want validation
To know they are being heard
To know that someone is listening.

Girls want men
Far different than boys
Who only know how to toy
With their hearts

Girls want love
Often confused with lust
They want something unconditional
Where no matter what they do
Or who they are
They will be loved

Girls want to live
To live life without a care
To wake up and not brush their hair
To grab their coffee and head out the door
To reach the bottom of the cup and come back for more

Girls want to be appreciated
Buy her flowers and speak your mind
Write her a letter and always be kind
Let her know how special she is
Or else she’ll walk away and soon be his

Girls want you to come to the door
When you pick her up for your date
Walk up the steps and never be late
Meet her parents and shake her dad’s hand
Let her know what all you’ve planned
Because you could be the greatest guy
With your hair quiffed up, you look so fly
But there is one step you must take
It’s going to the front door, don’t make a mistake.

Dreaming Wish

To feel the warmth again
To walk hand in hand
To see the stars light up the sky
As I’m standing by your side

To dream of a world
When you call me your favorite girl
Standing in the rays of the yellow sun
To think our lives have only begun
And this is where it has taken us.

Where I’m wishing to dream
Of you and me
Lying so close that we’d never part
This is really just the start
Of a sad thought.

Thoughts that never turn into words
Words I’ve said but you’ve never heard
Imagining the touch of your kiss
But this is only my dreaming wish.
