Friendship Lost

It was hard to imagine what I had lost.
Or how much it would really amount to in cost.
But as time has passed I have come to know.
That friendship is as priceless as eliminating my foe.

An understanding established over so many years.
Strengthened by occasions of laughter and tears.
Mutual support without reservation or condition.
Selfless acts of caring with no evil intention.

I’ve left that opening, through which someone could climb.
To have a new best friend would be so sublime.
You can make yourself enemies, in the blink of an eye.
But you’ll have only a handful of real friends before you die.

When you find real friendship do not take it for granted.
Treat it like flowers that you have just planted.
Care and nourish it, create the conditions for it to grow.
How long before you lose it, you’ll never ever know.

When you friends disappoint and don’t meet your expectation.
It’s hard to find a cure, you’d have preferred some prevention.
Tell them how you feel, trust the strength of your bond.
If they are really true friends, then they ought to understand.

When all is said and done, nothing will last forever.
You’ll lose all your friends, as sure as changes to the weather.
So while you have them with you, treasure each and every one.
And let the good memories keep you happy after they are gone.
