Ode To Mid-Life

So many years doing what I should
Daughter, sister, wife, mother
Expectations to meet, unrequited dreams to fulfill
Oh how exhausting it all proved to be

Stretching myself thin, reaching for the brass ring
Child, woman, seeker, believer
Knowing all my dreams were just around the bend
Always just around the bend

Is it any wonder I lost myself
Naive, hopeful, loyal, passionate
In time the girl I was found her voice again
To damnation with their expectations

A mid-life crisis they say
Foolish, anxious, emotional, angry
Not herself, just a phase to be endured
Oh how great was their surprise

Standing like an autumn maple
Strong, confident, colorful, true
Singing a familiar song not heard in decades
Finally rounding the bend

If a mid-life crisis it be, bring it on, I say
Dreamer, achiever, lover, friend
I am the butterfly emerged from sleep and ready to fly
Fly with me, see the beauty in life, or be left behind

She Must Know

She must know he loves her.
She must know how her voice affects him.
How each time he sees her, he has to force himself to breathe.

She must know he wants her.
She must know the ache he feels when she’s not near.
How he longs to feel her in his arms when he goes to sleep each night.

She must know he needs her.
She must know that her faith in him gives him strength to hope.
How she can make him smile even after an awful day, just by being there.

She must know he loves her.
She must know that pushing her away is destroying him inside.
How frightened he is to let her inside the rigid armor he has built to protect himself.

She must know he wants her.
She must know that he could never replace her with another.
How her love has touched him like no woman before or after ever could.

She must know he needs her.
She must know that when he says he does not care anymore, he is lying to himself.
How her stubborn refusal to give up on him is the most precious thing to him on this Earth.

She must know he loves her; though his words and actions spurn her.
She must know he wants her; though he says to let him be.
She must know he needs her; though his pride won’t let him tell her.

She must know….right?

What Did I Ever Do Except Love You?

In stealth, you dealt the first stinging blow
A dual edged blade, it cut through my spine
Words of hate flowed effortlessly from you
What did I ever do except love you?

Like poison, your hateful tirade spread
A horrid venom, it seeped through my veins
Brought me to doubt all I know to be true
What did I ever do except love you?

In silence, my heart lay in pieces
An empty void, lost in unfulfilled dreams
Devoid of answers still one question begged
What did I ever do except love you?

The Storm

Rain falls on the roof
Each drop plays a familiar note
I toss and turn no sleep to be found
The storm rages on

A chill fills the summer air
My body aches with fear and longing
No comfort to be found inside
The storm rages on

Raindrops hit my face
One by one, they awaken my senses
To erase fear, doubt, and sensibility
The storm rages on

Lightning streaks across the sky
I am blind to the dangers ahead
In the flash of light I see only hope
The storm rages on

As fast as it came
The rain starts to fade
I retreat inside my shelter
The storm rages on

My thirst overcomes me
I am consumed by the need
To feel the rain on my face again
The storm rages on

The stars shine like gems
On a cloudless night
I toss and turn no sleep to be found
The storm rages on

The Labyrinth

I stand looking in, the narrow path ahead of me.
Before me lay twists and turns that I can’t possibly predict.
Each step will take me further from refuge.
Demons hide in the dark recesses, waiting.
I hesitate, foot half raised to take the first step.
Fear saturates the air around me.
I close my eyes and will my foot to the ground.
Exhaling, I take another step forward.
Despair will not cripple me, I will persevere.
The peril fades in the light of the prize.

Hot and Cold

Sometimes the anger rages inside.
I want to attack.
Tossing and blowing like a hurricane.
I want to scream.
Igniting a fire of hatred within me.
I want to explode.
A river of emotion overflowing.
I want to cry.
Rushing currents of icy tears.
I want to escape.

The Crossroads

Silent warnings echo from all directions
Ink smudged skies tell a tale of woe
Stained tracks mark well the path I have traveled
No moon lights the way at the crossroads

Shadows conceal the flawless pavement
Smooth and even, it beckons me forward
Sights and sounds both familiar and foreboding,
No blanket comforts me at the crossroads

Trees give way to a graveled lane
Fresh cut limbs reveal a path untraveled
Lingering promises of danger and adventure
No rail prevents a fall at the crossroads

Glints of light line a street of brick
Hints of spring bud in jagged cracks
Harmonic dissonance colors a gentle summer shower
No shield stops the raindrops at the crossroads

Silent warnings fade into curious whispers
Amber tones spill hope into woeful darkness
A rising sun lends its warm light to the paths ahead
No excuses – life moves forward at the crossroads

As I Am

I never promised you perfect.
I can promise you drama, bad jokes, tantrums, and tears.
I can also promise you moments of quiet reflection, infinite trust, passionate reconciliation,
      and unconditional love…no matter what.
When I love, I love completely; body, heart, and soul; I know of no other way.
Push me, kick me, cut me to the bone; you will not break me.
I thrust when I should parry; advance when I should retreat.
I am not wounded and broken; some damsel in need of rescue.
I am a beautiful, frustrating, complicated mess...and I like it that way.
So save your judgments; open your mind...and heart.
Love me…as I am…if you dare...

Love and Loathing

They were moments without meaning…
A soothing illusion of safety during a storm.

Well intended tokens of misplaced faith …
Tin medals commemorating saints long forgotten.

Words that became meaningless syllables…
Partial truths spun from the webs of insecurity.

Certainties revealed to be uncertainties…
A passion lost in perverse notions of chivalry.

Emotion born of need, so sure to falter…
Yet sustained by the waters of fate.

Love and loathing cupped in a tight embrace…
A silent storm raging on in the silence.

The Real You

The Real You
By Laura Malmstrom

As the moon rises above the trees
I hear the raindrops on the roof playing their lullaby
You lie next to me; your soul bared naked
The real you.

As you fall asleep to rhythmic drum of the rain
Your armor melts away and your body betrays your heart
You put your arms around me, pulling me closer
The real you.

As you dream of things ne’er to be recalled
Words unspoken revealed in mere murmurs
You speak those truths you deny by day; you confess your need
The real you.

As you toss and turn in the hours before the dawn
You pull me unbidden into a passionate kiss
Content now to sleep ‘til dawn, you hold me tight against you
The real you.

As I ponder the deceptive nature of the night
The darkness emerges as a well of truth
You lie next to me, your soul bared naked
The real you.
