Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
The most beautiful poem suits you,
written simply, like your own beauty;
with the soft dawn breeze
dancing lightly upon the curtain
as it drifts through the open window;
like a rose half-open—the bloom of youth—
a stanza paused at the break of day.
May the breeze blow ceaselessly,
and you unfold from the curtain’s folds
like a butterfly emerging from the shadows,
your face a trail of light at daybreak
awaiting the rising sun,
your beauty revealing itself in full splendor—
a verse that touches the firmament.
Let the breeze rise from the depths of your soul,
stirring the curtain with a flickering pulse—
your form, a cherished vision,
drifting through the open window;
in your dark eyes, the sea
becomes a mirror of the sky,
with words like lighthouses in the boundless blue.
And should the time come for the breeze to fall silent—
as if a hand had closed the window—
you will dance lightly upon the curtain,
moving eternally within its graceful folds,
your beauty shining in the firmament;
the words in these verses
will speak only of you, forever.

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
I am what I am!
I am a positive breeze
blowing now between us,
with a clear sky in my mind
and a blooming orchard in my heart.
I am a sense of certainty
in our stride,
along the labyrinthine paths
of a world that keeps on growing.
I am a clear voice
amidst our voices,
our inexhaustible speech
heard in every language.
I am a warm smile
amidst our alienation,
with a tender gaze and humanity—
an embrace for all.
I am the strong, rapid heartbeat
of our love,
a revitalized pleasure
in the pulse of happiness.
I am love—
true love,
given without expecting anything in return;
a positive breeze,
a sense of certainty,
a clear voice,
a warm smile,
a strong, rapid heartbeat;
I am what I am!

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
I journey through love
on the most beautiful voyage—
into the boundless blue,
into the wildest wave,
into the whitest foam.
My body, the sturdiest hull;
my soul, the tallest mast;
my thought—this
most beautiful voyage—
a wave to batter the hull,
and as a reward,
the mast touching the sky.

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
I journey upright
in an unseen four-horse chariot,
along the eternal path of time—
a charioteer;
with slackened reins
I calmly appear before you.
Motionless beside your absence,
at the navel of your land,
amidst your Pythian Games—
a charioteer;
with broken reins
I hold fast your imperishable feats.
Serene, I journey alongside
in your victory celebrations,
along the meandering ribbon of the Kabeiroi—
a charioteer;
with balanced reins
I glorify serenity and grace.

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
I paused by the river in the late afternoon—
how many years have passed!
The plane tree on the bank, towering,
the riverbed unchanged;
what, I wonder, will I find on the other side?
The hollow in the plane tree has widened,
memories stored within its hiding place—
time ferrets them out through nostalgia!
We used to play cops and robbers as children;
dry plane leaves, at the mercy of the wind!
The riverbed, an endless white snakeskin,
stones rolled round like scales—
how often I slipped into its freezing waters!...
my schoolbag a lifebuoy upon my back;
sunken pebbles held hostage in the sand!
On the opposite bank stands my childhood home;
its chimney smoked on a day like this,
the doorway held a sweet scent as Mother passed through,
the courtyard gate creaked at Father’s step;
a robin sang amidst the fresh snow!

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
It is raining outside! I gaze at the photograph
of my mother!... a young child!... playing in the rain!
Her long, jet-black hair is dripping
onto her dress!... the embroidered flowers are drinking it in.
Barefoot in that captured moment of running—
one foot touches the earth on tiptoe,
the other is in the air!... she balances there, carefree.
Her small hands, like tender tree shoots—
one reaches forward as if following someone,
the other trails behind as if beckoning someone.
The sun shines upon her rosy cheeks;
stars and the moon swim within her eyes.
Outside, the rain has stopped! Through the windowpane
I see blooming flowers dancing in the breeze,
I hear the rustling of trees,
I see the sun’s rose at dusk, at dawn,
and night’s soft, ebony scarf
embroidered with stars and the moon;
I see my mother!... out there!... calling to me!
Through the windowpane… the rain is dripping!

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
Empty seashore
The seashore is empty!
In the sea breeze, a vision—
your form!...
a puzzle!... with the pieces of your absence
joined in the refrain of the lapping waves—
pebbles, seaweed, and seashells.
Upon the emerging pebbles,
your light tread!...
An Aphrodite passing by,
steeped in the brine of youth,
leaving behind—in the fading wave—
a note of a wild waltz for this refrain.
Amidst the tangled seaweed,
your embrace!...
tight against the body of beauty,
loosened in the storm of desire,
two rose petals surrendered to the foam,
a note of stolen love—this refrain.
Upon the broken shells,
a shared promise—
the vow of an eternal love,
violated in the shifting sands,
like a shipwreck’s keel snapped in two;
the empty shoreline—a puzzle piece.

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
A deep-blue handkerchief
On the harbor quay,
amidst the bustle of the crowd,
the hour of parting,
a moment of farewell—
dyed a deep, deep blue!
The hour of parting
refracted in the early dawn light;
on the wet links
of the hoisted anchor;
on the sailor’s sweating hands
hauling in the cast-off lines;
on the foaming wave
escorting the ship to a foreign port.
A moment of farewell,
a glimmer on the harbor quay—
from a single tear
rolling down a burning cheek,
wiped away upon a handkerchief;
upon the farewell’s
deep-blue handkerchief!

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
As if it never left
And though your love has departed
and drifts further away with the passing years,
in dreams it remains ever close to you—
as if it were never absent.
In dreams, the past returns;
within the embrace of absence,
the heartbeat echoes more powerfully—
love’s most beautiful resonance,
as if it never fell silent.
And if your love should one day return,
changed by the years spent apart,
never speak to it of your dream—
as if it never left.

Ioannis Panagiotopoulos Poem
Melancholy is a dreary morning;
hidden within our souls
like mist spread over the marsh—
upon the stagnant waters
and the treetops
that refuse to drown.
