The Artist

The artist has hidden secrets in
The paintings on her olive skin
Indents on a flat desert plain
Pale pink mirages full of pain
A reminder of a time long gone
Of cries for help from far beyond
Immortalized in the tiny scars
Tragic constellations among the stars
She was enchanted by the way it felt
To burn the cards she had been dealt

But the numbness did not last forever
That haunted string was bound to sever
From the ashes she was born again
And found someone to call a friend
So the artist put her pain into song
Magical poetry about all she’d done wrong
But though her art began to fade
When temptation called, she obeyed
Under cover of darkness, when her wounds start to gush
Her soft, tender fingers still reach for the brush

Stages of Grief

I know I was never your favorite,
But you could have given me warning
Your letter came as a surprise
So I packed my bags in the morning

You denied all I’ve worked for
I don’t think you knew
That through every ocean
I did it for you

It must’ve been out of anger
I was your music box for so long
Don’t understand why you shattered me
Still don’t know what I did wrong

Looking back, I wonder
Why I accepted your bargain
I thought I was your thesis
Now I’m just a note in the margins

Another depression on the surface of the moon
It won’t be long before I cease to exist
You’ll move on to other galaxies
With me clenched in your fist

It’s painful how quickly I’ve learned to move on
Maybe the only reason I accepted it
Was that somewhere in the trenches of my heart
I had unwillingly expected it

Among the twinkling constellations
I was your star, so I thought I would shine
And in another universe
Maybe you could have been mine

What Love Is

poets believe love is iridescent
a comforting lullaby, tucked in tight
children romanticize stolen moments
a princess awaiting her shining knight

the Queen sees her marriage as a power
a guarantee of where loyalty lies
the jester laughs at the chains around her
waiting for the day when royalty dies

lovers see Aphrodite’s true nature
for love is not a heartfelt bouquet
it doesn’t have a sugary flavor
it’s a china bowl; with new cracks each day

Forgiveness knows that her words are the glue
she patches the fractures between the two

A Mother’s Love

Carved from the hollows of her heart,
The child resembles her deepest desires
Her hopes and dreams are all contained
In the eyes of her offspring, burning with fire

Her life is not one of envy, but simple and plain
All of the warmth soaking into her daughter
She will grow into a lovely young woman
With all of the love that her mother brought her
