Saphira Carter Poem
Today I turned 14.
I’m hoping this year is better than my last.
And all the others in the past.
But I’m not writing this about myself.
I’m writing this, so others know it’s okay to need help.
13 was hard.
Honestly, I’m left here scarred.
13 was the age I was supposed to love.
But that’s the last thing I felt.
13 caused me pain.
It made me feel like I was going insane.
So many sleepless nights.
Listening to the voices in my head fight.
I felt anything but alright.
13 was full of emotions,
Just not the right ones.
I turned 13 and was suddenly old enough,
Old enough to know about the family drama.
No wonder so many have trauma.
When I was 13, I felt anything but the same.
But all the things I shouldn’t have done,
Attracted me like a moth to a flame.
I hope that one day,
A 13-year-old girl will read this.
Because I know she probably feels alone.
She hides in her own home.
Her eyes cold as stone.
But behind closed doors, in the darkness of her room.
She lets out all the tears,
From the words she has consumed.
I want her to know that she’s not alone.
She’s wanted and loved by someone.
13 may feel like a big number.
But it’s not the number of reasons you should have.
It’s not the last number,
I want her to remember that little girl.
The one still inside her soul.
That little girl has a goal.
I want her to make that little girl proud.
Keep on counting.
13 isn’t the last number.
It never should be.
13 may feel like hell.
You may feel unwell.
You may look at food and feel physically sick.
Or cry and ask, “Why am I like this?”
Just know you weren’t the first to do it.
And certainly won’t be the last.
One day, this number will pass.
Because 13 isn’t the last number.

Saphira Carter Poem
In a parallel universe everything might be different.
I wonder what would happen if I wasn't the oldest sibling.
Or maybe if my parents didn't split up.
Would my life be completely different if I grew up in another state?
Or maybe, if I would've just asked you out and didn't wait?
In another world, did you say yes? And if so, how long did we last?
I'd like to know, because if it wasn't long then maybe I can stop dwelling on the past.
But without knowing, I can't.
I still think of you everyday, and I text you all the time.
I think of the shimmer in your eyes or how the way that you laugh is like a melody to my ears.
Would you notice those things about me in another world?
Do you in this one?
I keep wondering, but all I'm left with are unanswered questions.
I'm stuck wondering if you would ever say yes to someone like me.
Is that a possibility even in a parallel universe?
Am I as annoying and loud as I think I am in every possible place?
I can't help but wonder, only thoughts of you fill my head space.
I've been up all night, stuck on the thought of you.
Would we ever work out anyway?
Even in a parallel universe?

Saphira Carter Poem
I remember when I met you in Kindergarten.
Your beautiful pale blue eyes and long, blond hair attracting me to you like a magnet.
My dark brown eyes and dark colored hair looking too bland-
no room to compare.
I instantly thought you were prettier than me.
Then you came up to me, I was quite shocked.
But we have been best friends ever since.
Then, in 4th grade I moved.
I figured you forgot about me.
I mean, you were still gorgeous, you had a lot of friends,
And when you're 10 years old that means everything.
I came back in 6th grade,
I barely recognized you, but your piercing eyes told me who you were.
I went up and asked, just to be sure.
We talked throughout the day, like we never stopped.
BFF's forever, right?
I remember I went home, and for once I didn't cry that night.
Then, the year ended, and summer soon passed
7th grade, well, it wasn't much of a blast.
We got expelled together.
But then we went to the expulsion school and became even closer.
We cried on the last day that year, we knew we wouldn't see each other.
If only I would've told you about the scars buried deep into my wrist,
Maybe things would've ended then, and it wouldn't feel like this.
But, we're BFF's forever, right?
I mean, it does say best friends forever, so I thought that's what it meant.
But now we're almost done with 8th grade and we've both changed so much.
We were fine at the beginning, we picked out our schedules together.
Then after about a month, my sleeve went up too high.
You wanted me to quit, but it's hard.
You started vaping.
I started with you.
You're so pretty, I wanted to be like you.
Blue eyes, blond hair, skinny, everything I wanted but couldn't be.
I became belimic, you still don't know.
You gave me your suicide letter.
I was scared to leave you alone.
I kept you alive, but everything I said, you thought I was lying.
2 weeks later, I gave you mine.
I told you that I wasn't afraid of dying.
I'm not pretty like you, so what good am I?
I was 13 and alone.
One day my parents left home and I tried to end it all.
I woke up, and hated it.
2 months ago we got expelled.
Now we're in an expulsion school again.
Except, instead of getting closer, apart, we fell.
You asked out my crush in the same hour I told you I liked him.
You could get any guy with how pretty you are but you chose to hurt me.
Then you made up rumors for attention.
But, we're best friends forever, right?
I tried to cut you off, but you came crawling back.
Now you want to cut it off.
BFF's just don't last.
