The Quiet Song in the Fern

In the corner of the room, a memory grows,
in the reach of a fern that the family knows.
It started in 1964, ancient and vast,
a living connection to a love built to last.

I think of Granny Mae, gentle and still,
with a softness of spirit and a quiet will.
The way she would hum or sing under her breath,
a melody moving through life and through death.

A song as light as a frond in the air,
grown from the room that Granny Mae used to share.

It traveled from her, a gift given in grace,
to find, through the years, its own rightful place.
From your parents, Lorna and Peter, then passed down to you,
the soil is ancient, but the spirit is new.

It’s as full as the first one, vibrant and deep,
holding the secrets that the generations keep.
Though the fronds have a journey still left to go,
they thrive in the light of the love that you show.

And when your mom looks on,
Bronwyn, she sees more than a vine.
She sees a quiet life, woven and fine.
For in every new leaf and each green, curling tress,
Lives Granny Mae’s song and her soft tenderness.

Bronwyn, as you brush a hand against the green,
you’re touching a world that came long before you’d been.
It’s more than a plant. It’s a heartbeat, a hum,
a soft, living song of where you’ve come from.
In the way that you tend it, so steady and true,
the best of them all is now blooming in you.

The Silver Stream

You cast a net to catch the tide
To hold the river in your hand
The currents through the mesh will glide
No flood obeys a king's command

Paws and Peace

In grey sheets twisted, mind in repeats,
a brown labrador snores beneath the cover's warmth.
The chill of breeze floats in with gentle ease,
my heart trapped by this chocolate form.

His snores a lullaby, tail thumps in dreams,
chasing squirrels, slobbery kisses reign.
My heart's melting, caught in furry schemes,
this labrador's snoring is my heart's refrain.

The day's jpegs loop, but night's calm I claim,
with labrador snores, my worries fade.
In this sweet chaos, my heart's at play,
stuck with this bundle of joy, in endless stay.

In snoring charm, my heart finds its way,
with labrador love, I'll stay.

Weight of words

Whiskey fueled words, a father's flawed design
Cut deep that night, a lesion that still defines
At sixteen, I was young, vulnerable and afraid
"Lose weight," he said, as if love had a weight to trade

He made a bet, a twisted, drunken test
A crude sum he'd pay if I passed his cruel quest
To shrink myself, to fit his mold and frame
Approval hinged on kilograms, a toxic, shameful game

"No one would want to marry you" words that stuck
A truth I'd found to be true, a heart that felt broken and rough
Now I hate mirrors, they show me the flaws
A constant reminder of the voice that says
"You're not enough, you have to change, you have to be more"

The wounds linger, a fragile self worth's toll
A memory that whispers, "You're not whole."

I see the weight I've carried long
A burden lifted, a new strength I've found
I'm learning to love the skin I'm in
Still struggling but getting better,
letting go of his sin

Intellectually I know, he was lost in drink and pain
and I am still finding my way, breaking the chain
Learning to love myself, flaws and all
Finding my voice, standing tall

Even if at times I slip and fall
I am God's daughter after all

Stone on a Chest I Love

Forgive me, but I have wanted to be a quiet ruin
not the kind you sweep away,
but the kind that makes you pause at the doorway,
hands heavy, wondering where the light went.

I know the cost of such a prayer.
To be missed like a lost limb
is to ask someone else to walk with a limp.
It is a humiliating thing, this hunger:
wishing a cold, immovable stone onto a chest I love,
just to know I was heavy enough to feel.

And oh, I burn with the shame of it.
The secret, selfish urge to linger
to sit like salt in the back of their throat
when they try to name something sweet.
I want them to reach for me against all reason,
to fight the slow, merciful erosion of time,
and to fear, even for a moment,
that they will never again be who they were
when my hands were still holding theirs.

It is a terrible grace to ask for:
to want your name to sit on a tongue
like an open wound that refuses to close.

Call it a sin, if you must.
I know the grief I am asking them to bear.
I only know that just once, before the noise stops,
before the dust claims my name,
I want to have mattered so completely
that forgetting me feels like pulling thread from skin.

The Man Who Never Smiles

Though he asked for this poem, "The Man Who Never Smiles,"
his laughter was a comfort that could stretch for miles and miles.
He played the drums and strings and the music made him whole,
as we sang along together, connecting soul to soul.

He was my softest place to fall, a shield against the cold,
a steady well of quiet words and wisdom, gently told.
He let his heavy guard just drop, he valued who I was,
and cherished every precious hour we shared, just because.

He went so far out of his way to ensure my needs were met,
With small details and thoughtful ways, I never will forget.
To bring me joy, to bring me peace, he made me his design,
A constant, reassuring force that aligned itself with mine.

I never had to question where I stood within his life,
his pure intentions spoke aloud, removing doubt and strife.
He made me his priority, so consistent and so clear,
there was no room for second guessing when his soul was near.

I let my own walls crumble down, a soul unseen before,
who suddenly felt heard and safe behind his quiet door.
He treasured every piece of me—my mind, my heart, my frame,
and taught a body full of doubt to no longer feel ashamed.

He was so deeply respectful, yet he set my soul on fire,
his hands awoke a flame in me, a direct, fierce desire.
He kissed me with a depth that reached the tips of all my toes,
we were on fire together, with a warmth that only passion knows.

He understood that empathy is where true strength begins,
that vulnerability is brave and integrity always wins.
He strove to be so understanding, kind in every place,
and showed a tender, deep compassion time cannot erase.

He threw my world right off its tracks, a beautiful unrest,
as my exhausted nervous system settled in my chest.
He quieted the screaming storms, the thoughts so loud and blind,
and healed the broken, hidden parts that I had left behind.

He never shouted out his love or spoke it like a chore,
but like a current in the dark, I felt it to my core.
He was the sudden, pure sunshine against my raging sea,
redefining what it meant to love and just to be.

He was so deeply right for me, incredible and true,
a beautiful, brief season that I hold onto.
But I was trapped inside the dark and heavy through and through,
so broken and depressed within, I had no strength for you.

I could not give you what you gave or the space you needed,
and so, I walked away from love and left my heart to bleed.
But time has done nothing to fade the emptiness I feel,
the short, sweet time we had together is the only thing that's real.

He lives inside my waking thoughts, he visits in my dreams,
and missing him has torn my heart apart at all the seams.
I carry all the blame for this, for love we couldn't keep,
for words that screamed inside my head but died upon my cheek.

The world goes on; the shadows fall but nothing fills the space
I miss the Nicky that I treasure and time cannot replace.

I miss you every day!

Cold Plunge

                             Ice
                    bitter, piercing
       shaking, gasping, plunging
     frost, numbness, glow, vitality
         stirring, warming, floating
                invigorated, bright
                             Fire

The Salty Shoplifter

The sea is a bit of a liquid brat,
always adjusting his white, foam hat.
He’s got no bones and he’s got no toes
but he follows wherever the north wind goes.
He’s a watery thief with a very long reach,
lifting every plastic bucket left on the beach.

He gulps down the sun like a vitamin pill
and never, not once, has the guy sat still.
He’s got billions of fish tucked deep in his pockets
and salt, crust stinging his old-water sockets.
He’ll roar like a lion, then hiss like a cat
but he’s mostly just loud and he’s mostly just flat.

He’ll tickle your ankles and tug at your shorts,
then mumble a rhyme through his bubbly snorts.
So give him a wave (if you’ll pardon the pun),
before he gets bored and outruns the sun.

The Ginger Ritual

The day has drained my soul; there's no time left to wait,
I slap the kettle lever, fire the engine high.
I need a rescue mission for my current state,
and grab the grey and white ceramic of my eye.
My absolute favourite mug. The water starts to roar,
It sounds like trouble bubbling but it's just the start.
The Rooibos bag goes in, those lazy tannins pour,
A slow, dark comfort creeping right into my heart.

But wait-where is the ginger? Panicked, at top speed,
I grab my mini grater, shredding till it hurts.
That fiery, fresh root is the remedy I need,
Because a bit of ginger always sparks and flirts,
Then boom - raw honey! Heaven drops into the chill,
with floating spicy to titillate and thrill.

Rooibos tea is a family favourite in South African homes.

Lost at Sea

In long days' absence, the sun's bright glare,
beats down, a burning shore I cannot leave.
The day is too long, my body in water's snare
but my mind's an ocean, deeper, waves of grief I weave.

Good memories now of pain, like ocean debris, float and stray.
My heart aches for your touch, a fleeting spark that scorched my soul.
You were calm on the outside but stormy emotions on the inside.
Salt stained tears, remembering your smile, my heart's control.

The silence screams, waves crashing on the shore,
A goodbye, cruel words, "I can't, we can't, it's wrong" no more.
Your wound, a darkness, shadows still prevail,
I know you're not like that.
A gentle soul, lost in your own storm torn sea, I implore.

May the Lord bring you peace and heal your wounded heart
and maybe someday, love's waves will bring you back to start.
