Richard Sanchez Poem
A Reflection
My soul is one, my body is one.
I soaked my soul in drink.
And like my stone, cold heart
my dark, dark soul did sink.
My soul is one, my body is one.
They do not always blend
broken mirror, broken glass,
Twins clash in opposition.
My soul is one, my body is one,
like the sign of the yin and the yang.
Red wolves waiting in ambush,
Watching, snarling, . . . circling, glaring.
Walking barefoot on crackled glass.
One is my soul; one is my body.
In the silence of my mind,
the soft voice whispers “this too shall pass.”
In time, my soul should feel.
And in the place of my poor, tired heart,
a stained-glass window heals.

Richard Sanchez Poem
Hello Stranger
Hello, Stranger, I said with half a smile.
We shared glances, across a soft-lit room.
My eyes fell upon you, as you turned to walk away.
But you stopped, just out of reach,
stopped, smiled and said hello.
We both stepped forward, timidly,
stumbling on our every word.
Face to face, began the magic.
“Don’t tell me your name.” I whispered.
Afraid my words would dissolve the moment.
“I want to remember you by your smile.
The timid smile that you presented
when you first looked my way.
I want to remember the shyness,
in that twinkle of your eyes.”
We both knew something was happening,
almost scared to look away.
The pianist played a melody and
the softness of the notes
floated through the spacious room.
For just a moment, it was you, it was me.
Our hands touched lightly and our fingers intertwined.
Our essence seemed familiar, perhaps
from a lifetime, a time before today.
No matter where this night takes us,
I will remember you, by your smile,
and the twinkle in your eyes.

Richard Sanchez Poem
Silence is Golden
Silence is golden,
but gold is pure, bold, heavy and hot.
It glitters and radiates like the sun.
Silence is left when all the good-byes have been said,
and the tears have been patted dry.
Silence is left when the shoulder
cools after that long, last embrace.
If silence is a color, let it be rose, lavender rose,
cool, and blooming, calming, and soothing.
Be it floating, like soft cotton candy and wisps of heavenly mist.
At day’s end, the sun melts into the western sea.
In a last glimmer of hope, it sends out
a pillar of light, extending a luminous arm,
a golden, futile effort to extend its stay.
But nay, for rose lavender spreads its wings,
a savannah of soft, satin sheets
in an alternating pattern of pastels.
A panoramic display of fanning keys,
keys on a now silent, musical board.
I would never wish you an end,
but if there has to be one, I wish you silence.
Rose lavender silence,
in soft, soothing and alternating pastels.
