Elizabeth Sanders Poem
I set the game up.
I lost the only love I’ve ever known.
I never learned to play by the rules,
I had to learn them on my own.
I planted seeds in a garden
That was never mine.
In my mind, I watered it alone.
And now I watch as the flowers die.
Because they are all overgrown.
Now you know all of my demons,
And you can call them by my name.
Your eyes can see right through me,
Clouded by my shame.
I feel like a scared child running through a maze.
Frightened by the echoes of your voice
Calling out my name.
Each step you take to me
Makes me want to run away
You are holding up a mirror to all of my mistakes.
They say don’t chase.
Love should come easy.
But I’ve been standing here waiting,
Hoping that he sees me.
Now all of the signs point to, “she’s crazy.”
As you run to someone new.
I drown in the silence
As my lips are turning blue.
I thought I had my guard up
But somehow you broke through.
I never needed you to save me
But what if you do?
I’ll go back to my defenses
And paint the walls a shade of maroon.
I’ll stay grounded in my temple
And whisper my wishes to the moon.
Were you collecting pieces of my soul
Just to watch me bleed?
Now all of my scars are open
And I watch you as you leave.

Elizabeth Sanders Poem
Suddenly, it hit me.
When those guys I said I had the most intense feelings for and called it love
That wasn't love.
That was my nervous system
Screaming at me to choose something different
Those loves were never lost because
They left my nervous system a wreck.
It has been years since I've felt anything
Meeting him changed that fate.
I've been here before.
My voice felt small and he took my breath away.
But he was painted so perfect and matched every dr
eam I wished.
My body clung to control
Holding my tongue
His interest wasn't good faith
To him I was a threat.
I responded with the fear before I could see that.
My body remembers the outcomes from the past 2
Sparks that I called love
Were the 2 that hurt the most.
I remember the spark.
This was a warning.

Elizabeth Sanders Poem
Tik tok.
Suddenly, a white rabbit appeared from around the corner.
It's over.
I can't believe it.
I drop to the floor
Bury my face in the palm of my hands.
I feel myself slipping away
Quicker than quicksand in a cement mounted hourglass.
Thoughts race like a whirlwind
Surrounded by truth.

Elizabeth Sanders Poem
My heart is like a ticking time bomb
Emotions flow like lava
To the pits of my stomach
I sigh and try to catch my breath.
"One more night."
"Just, one more time," I whisper to myself.
I can't tell you how I feel.
Almost. But it's never enough.
Someday, but it never comes.

Elizabeth Sanders Poem
She's a runner
He plays it safe.
She chases love.
He'll take what he can take.
She waited without saying a word
He spoke louder to be sure that he's heard
