Promised Refuge

I once made you a promise
So long ago it seems a lifetime
Never again would you have
To face the darkness alone

It was a promise I would repeat
With each spiral and dark descent
I would never run away
No matter how much you expected it

Eventually you said goodbye
And it shattered me to pieces
But that promise never left me
Even if the muse behind it did

I worried for a while
Until I knew that you were safe
Then I focused on myself
And eventually pieces changed to peace

And now so much time has passed
But that promise isn’t void
So permanent its carved in stone
Even if I never need fulfill it

Like a cellar in a storm
A place of refuge from the wind
I'm not asking you always stay here
Just asking you know I'm still there

For storms are so destructive
The tornadoes, rain, and hail
So I'll always keep that promise
I will never let it fail

Don't Forget

There's no ill will
No wanting for revenge
I don't want her to hurt
Don't even want her to regret

I just want her to think
To remember now and then
Please don't forget
Don't lose the memory of my face

Remember how you felt
Not the love or chemistry
But remember being safe
Anchored in the storm

I don't want her to be sad
That would not be very kind
But what I really want
Is to be a splinter in her mind

The Caterpillar

The unknown fate of the caterpillar
Will it be butterfly or moth
Beauty or disgust
The caterpillar doesn't know
While it spins is cocoon
And begins it's compulsory service
Waiting and waiting
To see what it becomes
At last the moment...
My bitterness emerges

Life Doesn't Make Sense

Hot water freezes faster than cold
Wearing layers in the heat keeps you cool
Hummingbirds are the most aggressive bird
Sometimes life doesn't make sense

There are seashell fossils on mountain tops
On Venus, a day is longer than a year
Your head ages slightly faster than your feet
Sometimes life doesn't make sense

I know I'm not perfect
And neither are we
But together we could have been
Because
Sometimes life just doesn't make sense

But what is sense
When you stop to think
A spiral like that
Could drive you to drink

You can rationalize
Justify
Make recompense
But sometimes life just doesn't make sense

Tortured Memories

Memories are fickle things
They seem to love to torture
When you desperately just want to forget
Seems memory's fruitage is an orchard

They can seemingly come from anywhere
But they don't need to be regretted
They should still be remembered fondly
Not bemoaned, erased, or fretted

Because if memories were cheating
No one could be loyal
Just because something comes to mind
Doesn't mean your love is foiled

You can smell a smell or see a sight
Even hear a familiar tune
But none of thats a problem
Because he will still love you

So don't hate yourself for your memories
Your love's no passing fad
You can still be loyal to each other
And be grateful for what we had

If Only

I know I made mistakes
And I know I should have been there more
I know you needed more
And I know I should have tried harder
I know you I should have told
And I know not saying cost us
I know that's all on me
And I know I don't deserve you
But if I ever get a second chance
I know it will be different

No One Understands

Let it go
Get over it
Life moves on
The words echo
From all corners of the world
No one ever understands

Just need to open up
To ask for help
But even when they listen
From behind judgemental eyes
No one ever understands

Every time a door closes
They say another opens
But lately they just slam shut
No one ever understands

I'm dying of thirst
In an ocean of salt water
No one ever understands

Will this self pity ever end
No one ever understands

No one ever understands

Falling Forward

Just keep walking
The words ringing in his ears
He marches ever onward
Trying to leave the memories behind

Around each new bend
A new start could await
But all he finds is empty promises
Nothing to the fill the void
She left deep inside

Each new path
Every possibility tried
He tries desperately to forget
Not to taint others with her memory

Comparisons aren't fair
To them, to her, to him
But inevitably they creep in
And the world seems to fall short

Not because she was perfect
Or even better than anyone else
But like a puzzle piece misses it's companion
Because nothing else fits quite right

He doesn't want her back
She's happy, secure, and safe
He knows shes probably better off
So he moves on, walking ever forward

The Beacon

Its not a lighthouse in a storm
Theres no foghorn to be heard
Lighthouses warn of danger
Make you turn away without a word

Its not a spotlight to be avoided
Not glaring into your soul
Not trying to bring attention
To every flaw or failed goal

Its a beacon there to guide you
To help you find your way to shelter
No matter what the storm or spiral
When you mind goes helter skelter

You'll never be alone
Thats a promise I won't let go
Never leave you to be abandoned
Come fire, rain, or snow

For now all is quiet
You're comfy snug and warm
And while I'm happy that you're safe
I worry bout the calm before the storm

So if the darkness should surround you
And the clouds start to roll in
Stop and find light I've left
Let it be your beacon

An Astronaught's Goodbye

We were never rivals
You learned about me later
But the choice was made
Long before it was vocalized
You were the obvious selection
I never stood a chance
It turned me inside out
Three words were met with two
And then with one
But now it's zero
And in the deafening silence
As I feel myself fade away
I have but one request
Take her to the moon, okay?
