Dakota Helwig Poem
As the warm, yellow sun set upon the low hills.
And the cold damp wind gave me chills.
I shed a tear that very day.
The first of thousands some might say.
My friends, my fellow soldiers.
Their death now strung on my shoulders.
For the blood shed on this field.
Forever in my heart will be sealed.
Is it a God given curse or gift that I'm alive?
The only of my regiment to survive.
For now and ever i'll bask in sorrow.
And so will the others who receive a letter tomorrow.
For we all try to decipher the need for death and despair.
To make a future for those who won't care?
Who won't honor and remember the soldiers who fought on this field.
Who's deaths, forever in my heart, will be sealed.
