Ode to the Beach

Waves careening up
And down on the vast shoreline;
The sea’s melody.

Songbird

Lirena was a songbird born of yore
Who dearly loved her husband everyday;
She sings her songs of contentment no more.

An adversary’s troops ransacked the shore,
A ruthless marauding they did display;
Lirena was a songbird born of yore.

Her loving husband whom she did adore
Abducted mercilessly from the fray;
She sings her songs of victory no more.

She trailed the captor’s ship on raft with oar,
Enduring stormy gales and restless waves;
Lirena was a songbird born of yore.

Making landfall, sprinting upshore,
In tearful attempt to plead and persuade,
She sung her people’s secret song of yore.

But the Adversary had no remorse,
Her beloved was already in decay.
Lirena is a songbird of long forgotten lore;
She sings her songs of compunction forevermore.

Ode to My Beloved

If rain pours down, is sunshine far behind?
I’ve wasted so much time believing lies
Until I met a man who changed my mind,
And stole my heart too, much to my surprise.

If winter comes, is springtime far away?
I didn’t think I’d be so blessed with this,
A man who shows he cares for me each day;
A love like ours is truly peaceful bliss.

When dusk prevails, the dawn will break again.
He’s shown me how to truly love myself.
Our memories are far more precious than
Material things I could put on a shelf.

For as long as I’m his, this I know to be true:
There is nothing in this world that I cannot do.

A Paschal Praise

The Christ descended from His Father’s throne;
In dying on the cross, He conquered Hell.
Then He rolled away His sepulchral stone;
The sting of death would no longer prevail.
A glorious word of good news to tell!
His disciples worshipped in prostration
As they prepared in humble elation
To spread news of the resurrected King
Who paid the price of mankind’s salvation;
A new song all of creation will sing!

His Love is Never Far

Her sharp words echo, carving through my mind,
A prayer escapes my lips for some peace to find.
Upon my bed I cry and pray to You,
And often wonder if Your word is true.
But who am I to doubt Your tender love
When You have shown me mercies from above?

The God Who made the world, the sky and sea
Sees me for who I am, and still loves me.
Almighty One who calls the stars by name
Forgives my sins and covers all my shame.
He knows my heart, my every flaw and scar,
And yet He says His love is never far.

Despairing, hoping for a friend to dry
These tears of wistful sorrow that I cry.
Alone and broken, waiting for a sign
That I can heal this aching heart of mine.
But who am I to doubt your saving grace
When You have brought me safely to this place?

The God Who calms the storms and conjures rain
Will wipe away my tears, and break my chains.
Almighty One who made the moon and sun
Has said His work in me is far from done.
He knows my heart, my every flaw and scar,
And yet He says His love is never far.

Though I may walk through the darkest valley,
I’ll fear no evil, for You are with me.
Every restless night You have seen me through
My love and my life, I owe them to You.
So I’ll shake off the dust, mend these broken wings,
And one day with choirs of angels I’ll sing.

The God Who watches sparrows watches over me;
His Spirit makes me who I ought to be.
Almighty One Who commands legions up above
Is still redeeming us with His great love.
He knows every dark crevice of my heart,
And yet He says His love is never far.

His Gleaming Eyes

His gleaming eyes are blue, like oceans vast;
They study me with love and tender care;
They tell a tale of trials long since passed,
And dream of going where most wouldn’t dare.

His heart makes music, like the beating drum;
It gently beckons me to his embrace;
It reassures me that we’ll overcome,
And makes me feel at home in any place.

His gentle hands still wield compelling strength;
They labor for our livelihood and life;
They hold my heart through the night’s dreaded length,
And guide my way through sorrow, storm, and strife.

I see that I’m his most treasured prize
When I look into his gleaming eyes.

My Mom that Didn't Have to Be

A mother’s role is not an easy one,
A taxing undertaking, to be sure;
And if it weren’t for you, I would have none.

But you would make me feel so small, demure,
With words of anger and a cruel hand;
Of my own place and worth I was unsure.

There’s only so much hurt a child can stand
Before they numb themselves to their own hearts.
I know I’m not the daughter you had planned,

But truly we are not that far apart.
I know you loved me in your own way still,
And maybe in that love, we can restart.

Despite it all, I love you even still,
And Heaven surely knows I always will.

An Advent Praise

A joyous tiding on this hallowed night:
That for our sake, a virgin would conceive.
The Child would promise everlasting light
To all who in His saving love believe,
And for our sin we may no longer grieve.
Among the beasts was born this infant King
As choirs of angels came to dance and sing.
The shepherds marveled, the wise men rejoiced
And praised the Lord for the good He would bring
As all of creation joined with its voice.

New Year's Hope

A promise of new beginnings,
A hope for brighter tomorrows;
A time to loose from all sorrows
And bind to faith so enriching.

A promise of new beginnings,
And resolve to redeem today;
If God is for us, come what may.
A time to praise, rejoice, repent,
And reflect on the time we spent.
Let us be glad this New Year’s Day.

Shepherds

The treasurer they called Judas,
In his folly and imprudence,
Sold his Master for silver’s stock;
The shepherd who betrayed the flock.

The fisherman they called Peter,
Tasked to build the Church and lead her,
To be her foundational rock;
The shepherd who cares for the flock.

The scholar widely known as Saul
Adopted the new name of Paul;
He saw the light on one long walk,
Repentant hunter of the flock.
