Jenny’s Outside

…This little girl…
She’s someone new,
A miracle…
Who’s heart could pierce the moon
Although I don’t know her,
I see,
Her fall through the cracks of what’s unseen
She needs someone strong,
To stand by her side…

…Instead she’s found me…
…Instead she’s found me…

…Pathetic…Little…Me…

I step back as the door closes,
And to you I say, “goodbye…”

Hows Your Father

Our Maureen sits,
At an old kitchen table
She’d say: “I love you,”
If she were able
But she missed her chance,
And took to the bottle
She cried herself sober,
And ran back to her hovel

She ran her hand through her golden brown hair,
And battered her eye lids,
Terry was there
A young driver,
She was two years his junior,
But he said: “I love you,”
And Maureen’s heart fluttered

Two happy teens,
She found love in his arms
She warmly smiled,
In her eyes there were stars
Her eyes, they made up
A deepened blue sky
In the back there is heaven,
To where she and Terry would fly

Laughing out loud,
How her life could be different
If only her Terry,
Would never leave her
He held her hand,
And gave her a drink
How her heart fluttered
As back she gave him a wink

Blamed for a crime,
He did not commit
It sent him crazy,
To her her heart he gave her a hit
She vowed, by his side
She would forever stand
She warmly smiled,
And held his hand

She wrote him poems,
And lovely letters
He didn’t read them,
Instead he resent them
Maureen just sat,
Crying at the table
Her eyes filled with tears
She took to the bottle

Screaming out loud,
Her life could be different
If only her Terry,
Hadn’t had left her
Now she is forced to find love,
In oneself,
With strain she is stranded,
Her heart on the shelf

She went to the bar,
With her mother and sister
To self isolate,
She went to the bathroom
When she had left,
She looked a new woman
That’s where she met Tony
A sweet look she then gave him

Tony took Maureen to the back of the pub,
And spoke to her softly, before they made love,
Two children later, and they’re still together
But her heart wanders
Away like a sailor

She loves her Tony, although he is nasty
Calls her a “slag,” and bullies her hastily
Not letting Maureen speak, or state her case
So she’s forced to break down,
And drink away her haze
She runs away to the “safety,” of mother
But she isn’t listened
And kicked out by her father

Self negotiating in her fixtures narration,
After years of not speaking,
She’s sees her young Terry
Dries away her tears,
Their love, they rekindle
He takes her to safety
After her father’s funeral

Whispering gently, how now life is different
No longer drinking,
In love, and with Terry
Maureen is settled,
She looks up with a smile
Laying in his arms
She’s content for a while

Madness

London City,
Light and pretty
One, nine, sixty-two
A woman we’d all later know,
Was born,
Dreaming black and blue
Her smile, it would curse her world,
Of laughter, love, fear and grief
To know her story,
First we must rewind
The madness that lies within belief…

Michelle, she was a lovely girl,
Grew with a gorgeous heart
Her eyes, they sparked a sunlight blue,
Strategised in the starlight -
Since she was a girl, dreamed of acting,
She’d be seen on our TV
Inspiring young un’s just to be themselves,
‘Cause that is how you will be free

Michelle, she was a lovely girl,
Grew with a gorgeous heart
But fear seemed to control her whole,
It derailed her start
Painted black and blue by something she could not control,
Threatened to spill up her guts,
She cried out in her bedroom

Michelle, she was a lovely girl,
She had a gorgeous heart
But something happened deep inside,
She cried, and cried, and cried
She lost her friend, she lost herself,
She felt she had nowhere left to turn
Derailed her path to stardom,
Her grief crashed into her world…

London City,
So un-pretty,
A woman we’d all later know,
Was standing on the edge of fate
Half frozen,
And half searching for a mate
Her heart, though torn,
Still could serve as comfort for a lonely sole,
She took up acting classes,
With the cousin of the friend she lost

In 1988,
She got her big break

Come on, Michelle, tell us,
What’s your secret, Michelle?
Soap star, turning life star,
Tell us, take us back to the start
Come on, Michelle, tell us,
What’s your secret, Michelle?
How come others can’t do it,
But you can?
Michelle, why you always in the papers,
Michelle?
Why you always on our TV’s,
Michelle?
How come others can’t do it,
But you can?

She stays quiet,
Tears silent
Hear that…?

That’s the sound you hear,
When your heart is torn,
And there’s nothing you can do about it

They pounced like lions,
Calling her a liar,
And there’s nothing she can do about it
They pounced like tigers,
Locked her like a liar,
And there’s nothing she can do about it
Hear that…?
They pounced like lions,
Calling her a liar,
And there’s nothing she can do about it

Nothing she can do about it,
There’s nothing she can do about it,
She finds a way to solve it,

Hi Michelle,
I must say you are looking better,
Like you’ve found a new form of life
Please tell me,
How far did they twist you?
What did you do with your time?

“Thank you, Katie, for having me,
And I must say,
These chairs are more comfy this year,
My advice for those who are wondering,
Is never give up on your tears
‘Cause at the end of the day,
They make you
They construct you from the reused ground up
And without them I wouldn’t be who stood before you,
Without them, I don’t think I would be here

So never be afraid of regret,
And never back down from a fight
Be who you are,
Know you straight from the core
I don’t know if what I am saying is right,
But love me for who I am,
And not for what I may do
‘Cause from birth I’ve been tested,
And lifted,
From birth I’ve been twist in defeat,
But for who I may be,
Soon I’ll be free
So soon I will strengthen…

Soon I will walk on the sea”

London City,
Light and pretty,
One, nine, sixty-two,
A woman we’d all later know
Was born,
Dreaming black and blue
Her smile, it would curse her world,
Of laughter, love, fear and grief
Michelle…
Will you please take a stand?
The madness that lies within belief…

But I’m Smiling

I couldn’t help but think now of where her life would go now she was gone. I suppose I done it to myself really. I transfixed on the reasoning for ages, only now coming to terms with what happened. Before that I drank. Silly? Stupid? All of the above? It would never be insisted that we didn’t give the girl a good send off. She weren’t just a girl. She weren’t just an anything really. You’re not supposed to discuss death with a kid, they say. Or maybe I just weren’t ballsy enough to do so myself. I’d rather rely on the real thing, probably ‘cause I’m too lazy to give a damn. Anyway, all we have left are shattered memories. So who gives a toss?

It was insisted that she should have a “celebratory leave” whatever hell that means. I applaud the bat lark who came up with those words together, I’d probably kill them myself. I usually think of a kid going to University, the parents a little lost, but happy the kid is making something of themselves. Not bloody death. Bastards! But, hey, if the need was felt that she should cross that threshold, then at least she went in style. I was one of many who loved her. I was one of many who admired her. I was one of many who wishes I was sober enough to have said, “goodbye.” I should have said, “goodbye.” Why didn’t I say, “goodbye?” A fancy car came round with flowers, this would be her last journey, saddened strangers hearing of this tragedy tearfully threw flowers as the cars slowly drove past. I walked into the room. Thousands of people were there, she was immensely popular. I guess I was in denial for the longest of times, it was scary to admit. I didn’t want to admit it? No choice of mine.

She’s dead. What little to comprehend, she’s dead. It hit me - she was never coming back. I had to bury my face - ‘cause everything hurt. My chest, throat, even my face. That’s what happens…

About her flowers! They all come out, lots of reds, and greens, and blues, and purples, and plenty of whites. All designed: ‘daughter,’ ‘sister,’ all beautiful. Little Wicker baskets were scattered all over the place, so plentiful, I almost choked on my tears. I noticed those baskets had that sodden stuff, that crap that keeps the flowers alive. A strange thing to notice, but was ever-present either way.

To me, though, the flowers were lifeless. I’m crying now. I should have told her I cared. I seek my reflection and say I’d done my best. But that’s just crap…

But I’m smiling…

Pathetic Little Me

Don’t be foolish, Jenny!
Don’t be pathetic, Jenny!
Don’t you run away,
‘Cause this is your time!
Don’t be stupid, Jenny!
Don’t be pathetic, Jenny!
Don’t be anything ‘cause this is your life!

Stand at attention,
Straighten the spine,
You are her teacher, so teach her at school
She’s not your problem,
She’s not your life,
So pretend to move on and don’t be a fool

Don’t be pathetic, Jenny!
Don’t be foolish, Jenny!
Don’t be anything ‘cause this is your life!
She doesn’t need you, Jenny,
Stop wasting time,
On loving a child who could never love you

But this little girl…
Is someone special…
…A miracle…

It’s so sad that she doesn’t know
Could I call myself a teacher,
If she…
Fell through the cracks I can see?
This little girl needs,
To be showered with love,
But it won’t come from me…
I can’t meet her needs,
She has found me…
Pathetic… Little me…

Pathetic… Little me…
Pathetic…Little…me…
Pathetic! Little…me…
I am PATHETIC! Little… me…

Pathetic!
Pathetic!
Pathetic!

…Pathetic… Little… Me…

Rearrange The Hurt

Kate:
Stand tall,
Light - Line falling
The sun is calling
So lets ride the rain and go
Let’s go

Lets ride, Michelle
Lets ride

Michelle:
Kate took control of every trip,
We took,
Buying into non-conformity,
She drove us,
She rode us,
She saved us
And once we were out on the road,
Did she uncover my eyes,
So I could see
‘Cause she knew I would run for the hills,
From a lack of certainty, I would flee

She believed in rolling the windows down,
She believed in the artistry,
Of not having plans,
And to not understand
Where to go when rolling around in town

Kate:
This ain’t right

Michelle:
What’s not right?

Kate:
Your descriptions. Your depictions? Put more effort into it.

Michelle:
I’m trying

Kate:
Then try harder

Michelle:
Do you remember, the day that you came to me?

Kate:
Yeah?

Michelle:
You sat down, somewhat solemnly,
And with one hand on my knee,
You looked at me
And said:
“Where you live doesn’t define,
The girl you are
Your family are lovely, to me,
And to me you are a star”

Riding Round,
We head for the South
Or sometimes we instead go West,
And the rest we make up,
Within our heads
Music is blasting,
The wind is blaring,
And we’re beyond caring
‘Cause crazy, little me
Has discovered the star that you saw in me

Kate:
Michelle, what the Hell?

Michelle:
What?

Kate:
You’re too reluctant. You must strike strong.
Now,
You see the speed I’m going at?

Michelle:
Yeah?

Kate:
Well, we’re going at a speed where a collision is almost certain, unless a quick change of direction.

Michelle:
Okay?

Kate:
So which way should I turn? Left or right?

Michelle:
I don’t know, which way?

Kate:
Who cares? A crash is about to happen. 3…2…1 Which Way?!

Michelle:
I don’t know?! Right!

Kate:
Slow, ‘Chelle, slow

Michelle:
I know right. Bloody Hell!
I don’t know. We’re just watching the sky rise, slow
I don’t know. But all I know is I don’t have the strength inside,
To let go.
The car is full,
And the sun still shines
And there’s a glaze of hope shining in my eyes
I don’t know. But all I know is I don’t have the strength inside,
To let go.

I can’t look back,
To seek what’s spaced
‘Cause there a tear in my eye
When I see your smiling face
So I’ll just drive,
I’ve come too far to feel like I’m not alive
Though you’re not alive
I feel your soul in me,
Though you’re a distant memory
‘Cause bleeding in my chest,
Is your heart, your eyes
But I can’t let your shone soul rest

Kate
So, where do you wanna go, now?

Michelle:
Take a left.

Kate:
No, I mean in life. What’s your dream? Where do you wanna go?

Michelle:
Not sure… I want to drive?

Kate:
No! More, ‘Chelle, more. Come on!

Michelle:
I want to feel the wind in my face.

Kate:
Bigger!

Michelle:
I want to be an actress! I want to shine!

Kate:
Yes, kid! C’mon!

Michelle:
I want to break rules. I want to complete impossibilities. I want to see the world!

Kate:
I want to paint. And live a life with no rules.

Michelle:
I want to ride forever!

Michelle:
The skyline overseas,
The starlight’s not empty
Just freedom
Just freedom
No hurt, work out our careers
Fleetwood Mac is all I hear
David Bowie playing, nice and loud
Hurt, we can’t allow

The stars are full,
No time to sleep
Freedom’s all we need
No hurt, we work on our careers
Music’s all we hear
David Bowie playing, nice and loud
Hurt, we can’t allow

Just ride into the sun,
Freedom

Lessons, we’re learning
Step into sun
Meeting, retreating
A lost history
If on edge,
Will I learn how to just be?

Lean on it. Love it. Live in history.
Keep it. Believe it. Stood still, retreat.
Just a young girl,
With no,
Purpose to be
Trees changing, exchanging
Their colours, they blur
Elated, showcasing
Their gift to the world
If I believe it,
Then will it work?
Or will I live out my life
Rearranging the hurt?

She’s laughing,
And I’m laughing
Just like she’s alive
A sunken spirit
Uplifted the skies
If I believe it,
Then will it work?
Or will I live out my life
Rearranging the hurt?

Driving faster,
Songs blaring
We sing along
No hurting, just Fleetwood
Our favourite songs
If I believe it,
Then will it work?
Or will I live out my life
Rearranging the hurt?

Will I live out my life
Rearranging the hurt?

To My Fears I Say, Goodbye

In the glow of your blue eyes,
A spark ignites the sky
With laughter, warmth and grace,
You light up every stage
Thank you for your gentle heart,
Inspiring me to play my part
Your smile’s a shooting star,
You have changed my life,
Just as you are

Dreams take flight with your warmth near,
You’ve embraced my dreams, and my tears,
And every time your spirit falls,
I’ll hold you close, ‘till you feel whole

I know I sought precaution,
Against all I could not understand
Yet you healed me as the blizzard,
Threatened to break me down
You stood still in the limelight,
And held a spotlight,
On what I thought were tears
I love you, I love you, I love you
And this is my song for you, dear

I run away from my problems,
Too scared to step onto the stage
I wrote my song for you,
Let it within your heart play
And you, spoke my words through,
Your smile, and eyes
I feel electrified,
By your words, so kind

You taught me to stand by,
All that I believe in,
And through your kindness, I am noticed,
A new me you created
I wrote this piece to say thank you,
In your kindness I’m alive
For the moments of love,
I am gratified

I feel like I’m an actress,
I speak my truths through your words
Within your eyes, there’s a comfort,
As you change my world
I will stand by, the spotlight,
And state my monologue tonight
I’m through with short “goodnights,”
To my fears I say “goodbye”

‘Cause together we change all laws,
Left unbroken
Unteach life’s wars,
Reignite integration
You have taught me to heal,
From what’s caused my erosion
Ascension derives from strengthened emotion,
You made me the girl I was meant to be,
And what’s played out on TV,
Is not all of you I remember, please
Let me state my case, with ease,
You set me free

I am through with short “goodnights,”
You have more than brought to life,
To my fears I say, “goodbye”

Guide Me

Your words cut through me,
Please don’t leave me,
Don’t speak those words again
‘Cause here I’m standing,
To you I’m begging
Will you take my hand?

Games with your mind I have played,
Yet, somehow you have stayed,
Yet, like a sailor you sail away

Guide my home to your heart,
Cool and collected, I’ve been,
You’ve dug through to my cracks underneath,
Please tell me you’ll stay with me
In your love, I believe
Guide my home to your streamless sea

You speak truthful,
Your words, they’re harmful
Please, don’t let them be true
‘Cause I can’t bare it,
But if you meant it,
Give me one last dance with you

Games with your mind I have played,
Distant I became
Have I once said: “I love you?”

“Please don’t leave me,” I speak,
These words I say are too weak
The thought of “alone” is too much,
You are the only one I love,
Guide my home to your faithful heart

Save A Dance

Maureen:
I see stars in your cloudless eyes,
If you didn’t care,
Then why’d you cry?
You believed so strong,
That we went wrong
The proof is in your touch

Terry:
You were so young when I saw your face,
We lit a match on our last day
The letters wrote,
They within me choked
They didn’t mean that much

Wake up, Wake up
Wake me from my dreams

Maureen:
Make up, Make up
Say you’ll be with me

Terry:
You dug your heel in my bleeding heart,
By in my head you ripped our love apart
Unfaithfully sat,
In a cab
He had you from the start

You said:
“Babe I want you more,
Forget that kid with a police record
He’s long gone,
Let’s have fun”
The story goes on and on

Maureen:
I want you more and more each day,
I can’t believe you pushed me away
You tore my heart,
My notes apart
I’m drowning in my stars

Terry, my love, if I had one wish
I wish you could please grant me this
One last dance,
Before in time we pass
Save a dance for us

Wake up, Wake up
Wake me from my dreams

Make up, Make up
Say you’ll be with me

Make up, Make up
Say you’ll be with me

Make up, Make up
Save a dance for me

Fall

There’s a girl, her name’s Michelle,
She hides her heart away
Behind the lights, the masks, the roles
And the plays,
Afraid to love, Afraid to break
Her smile is a mask,
And her tears form a lake

You see her upon the silver screen,
She’s smiling so bright
But the truth still remains unseen
Her heart locked tight in iron chains,
‘Cause feeling love only brings her pain

Oh, please, will you take a chance?
Let love be your own romance
Break the walls, start a flood,
Feel the fire, feel the blood

In the dark, her fragile fears reside,
A lonely heart’s her lullaby
Painted lips state her starstruck lines
And still her heart’s a lonesome chime

Feel the rain, let it fall,
It’s okay to risk it all
Hold yourself, and cry away
Take a chance to find your way

Feel the rain, let it fall,
It’s okay to risk it all
Break the walls, start a flood,
Feel the fire, feel the blood

Feel the rain, let it fall
It’s okay to risk it all
Feel the rain, and let it fall
You are safe to risk it all

It’s okay to risk it all,
So trust yourself, let teardrops fall

Book: Reflection on the Important Things
