Wrinkles

These wrinkles are precious
I have earned every one
Through fears I have faced
And battles lost and won
With laughter and smiles
I wear around my eyes
Through acceptance, denial
Not hearing the lies
With patience and kindness
Compassion and care
Letting go when I had to
And having to dare
Stepping up, Stepping back
Standing my ground
Quietly, dignified
Not making a sound
I have stood up and been counted
I have been back-seated
I have surrendered
But not been defeated
Because it takes bravery
To walk away from a fight
To understand that your “wrong”
Is someone else’s right
So life’s trials and tribulations
Show clearly on my face
As do the celebrations
All worn with pride and grace.

The Gift

A gust of wind
Blew through my door
Placing gently on the floor
A gift from Mother Nature’s store
Such beauty, such delicacy
Woven by the burly tree
Made me stop.
Made me ponder
Then take stock
To see such wonder
A perfect master of design
From base to apex, so divine
And yet this tiny, feathered blade
Has toiled through life
Its one-year age
To serve its host with basic needs
For mighty trees depend on leaves
And now its labour is all done
At the cooling of the sun
It’s discarded easily
Yet still yields its energy
The endless cycle spirals on
Because its work is not yet done
As worms begin their arduous toil
Turning leaves to rich, moist soil
The tree takes strength and so it weaves
Perfectly recycled leaves.

No litter please!

Please don’t leave your litter here,
There’s a river running near,
It harms the birds,
It harms the bees,
Before floating to the seas,
Where it harms the manatees,
Dolphins, whales, fish, and seals,
Swallow plastic with their meals,
They cannot clean up our pollution,
Please be part of the solution,
There’s a river running near,
Please don’t leave your litter here.

Writer's Block!

Teeth gnashing
Pencil snapping
Clock ticking
No clicking
Words failing
Mind flailing
Forehead sweating
Frowning, fretting
Blank page,
Blocking rage!
