A Letter to My Beautiful, Darling Wife

I sit next to you,

I have never seen such beauty in my life.

My beautiful, darling wife,

I have seen you stand in front of this mirror a million times,

And not once have I wanted to look away,

I have encountered thousands of mornings and countless nights with you.

 I remember years ago,

When our house first became our home,

And your auburn hair matched the colors of the leaves outside,

And that night, we danced to Frank Sinatra.

The hums of the music and the sways of our feet,

The sound of your voice singing, “I dream of you, more than you dream I do,”

We were hand in hand, and I had never felt so complete.

I remember a time when there were no wrinkles,

When our hands had not seen the passing of time,

A time when your hair was still the color of scorching flames and mine, the color of coal.

Each day, we stand in front of our mirror,

You comb the bit of hair I have left,

Your hands shake as you put on your ruby lipstick.

My beautiful, darling wife,

I sit here reminiscing about the life we have made together,

I feel as if today is my last day,

Seeing your beautiful face.

The doctors said my condition is worsening,

And I do not have much more time,

I asked you this morning to get ready for our date,

Although it will just be by my bedside.

Fragments

Living pigmentations of one’s imagination,

Inferring colors makes our vision blurry, but the scorching sun rests our eyes once again.

Fog covers the lenses of reality, making our eyes peel at the slightest sight of life.

Existence taunts our ideals and warps our abilities.
