Apollos Kiss

I have found little to paint my life
As exquisitely as your song
For the sun did not shine on my bearing
Or grant me shelter from the rain

I am but an ordinary creature
Of no flair or finesse to circumvent
My gifts are not of beauty or brilliance
My breath a mere intrusion on your journey

You see…the seasons failed to transform
That which knows no glory
And the canvas remains ill-favored
Powerless to rise above well-heeled judgment

And just as a seedling with no light
Will not age in splendor to greet the heavens
A soul deafened to life’s symphony
Will never truly learn to sing out in jubilee

Twas only in the sweetness of Apollo’s kiss
That I dared to dream of places beyond my horizon
And for a flitting, I stood barefoot in the garden
And felt full the majesty of Elysium

I welcomed the offerings, my book flung wide
Inviting fate to ink the pages of my journal
Welcoming the stain left on my heart, and my life
Cherishing the makings of bittersweet memories

But oh how fleetingly those treasured moments passed
And I woke from my reverie to find myself alone
Imprisoned still, in the concrete of my reality
My tender heart reeling from the loss

Yet…I do not rue the passing of your shadow over mine
Nor will I forget the elation of sunshine on my flesh
And though the fire sparked but for a twinkling
I will long remember the warmth of the flame

For, I have found little to paint my life
As exquisitely as your song, my love
And I will carry breathless, your lullaby
Captured forever…in my heart

The Great Pretender

I invented magical moments,
Joyous memories and heartwarming regard
Because I longed to feel
And to cherish such experiences

And I fabricated romantic notions,
Filled with sugar sweet whispers and tender kisses
Because I couldn’t discern them
In the urgency of your touch

I made up requited favor,
Complete with sincere appreciation and mutual respect
Because I needed to believe
In the virtues of kindness and integrity

And I fancied a soul connection,
With stirrings of true emotion and promise of untapped desire
Because I yearned to explore
The uncharted regions of your heart

I imagined a kinship,
A true friend, a confidant, a lover extraordinaire
Because I burned with a fire
Engendered by a mutual thirst

And I penned songs of ardent fascination,
Of blazing sunsets and soft velvet nights
Because I reveled in erotic fantasies
Where I swooned in the circle of your arms

I dreamt of passionate lovemaking,
Of breath defying chills and earth shattering thrills
Because I aspired to fly with you
Far beyond the heights of normalcy

And I had faith in real devotion
In genuine sentiment and profound intimacy
Because I fostered an undying hope
And held confidence in the righteousness of spirit

Yes, I pretended that you loved me
And that all the clues were no more than foolish insecurities
Because I believed that fairy tales can come true
But most importantly, I believed in you…

Bob and Bill

I aimed to walk the yellow wood
To stand the place where Robert stood
I searched the path, explored the glade
To find a rhyme, perhaps mislaid

Clouds were thick, a chilly scene
The path was dark, yet quite serene
It whispered to me like a child
My spirit light, my thoughts beguiled

So off I went, without a care
To seek a treasure hidden there
I yearned to stand amid the leaves
To see the beauty Robert sees

While wandering lonely as a cloud
I stopped to view a distant crowd
William spoke of such sight
A carpet rolling, bold and bright

Beyond the path and valley floor
A yellow scarf came to the fore
Much surprised, my eyes to see
Daffodils waving back at me

Bob and Bill, geez what a pair
They give me hope, when I despair
Their words invoke a blissful calm
A gentle salve, a soothing balm

My songs inept, my cadence flawed
Their words forever give me pause
My heart grows light when I pretend
To walk the paths, where they have been
