Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
As day fall and night came, we used to gather around my grand mother. That was our
favourite moment during the day. There was a sort of connection between us, the night and
my grandmother. There was something magical at that precise moment. My grandmother
was a very good story teller, she was so talented that sometimes it seemed like she took part
in the stories she used to deliver us. Those stories were full of meaning and through them,
she was giving us some life’s lessons that were going to help us later on. That was her way
to impregnate us to our culture and roots.
Our African realities and environment were well depicted in those stories. My grandmother
was teaching us some of our African values such as the value of a word, the bravour of man
or the respect that a child owe to an elder person. That is only when I grew up that I felt the
effects of those storytelling on my person. The most surprising thing is that I have almost all
those stories in mind and whenever I remember them, my heart becomes full of sadness
because I know that those moments happen only once in a lifetime. The stories were
sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying but we all loved them. We were thrown into a
magical world where animals, just as human beings, were able to speak. There was no limit
to our imagination. It was just like boarding on an airplane for a world tour. We never got
enough of them; we just sat down like stuck to the mat and we looked like statues; the only
thing that could make her stop was to see us sleeping; and even at that moment, she could
shift from a story teller to a singer of lullaby. During holidays, I used to spend some days
with her and she used to take care of me even though she was sick. She was a very good
cooker too. She taught us many delicious meals. I can’t end this account without talking
about her beauty. Yes she was very beautiful and elegant. Without much pretension I may
say that she was the definition of black beauty. And to quote India Arie I can say that, every
time I saw her brown skin “it made me think of honey or chocolate”. “Her kisses worth more
than gold to me, her hugs worth more than diamond to me” because her arms were my cosy
nest; her teeth were as white as an angel’s wings, and with her doe eyes, she was able to
brighten up everything that stand around her. As a child, every coin she used to give me
was like a billion dollar and everything I bought from that money was like a treasure found
in the deepest of the sea.

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Pretty little face
Pretty little body
Draped in your white linen
You remind me of an angel
Pure face
Pure soul
Pure heart
I want to drink in your
Pure and limpid spring water
So as to purify my soul
You mean so much to us
You have been the first to come
And you have brighten up our house and our heart
You are the sun
You are the beauty
You are the joy
You are the peace
You are the innocence
We all love you Papa

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Trade wind!
Bring me back in the days I was as small as a seed
Glimmering and growing under glass
I feel nostalgic for those days
When time was countless
Oh God of heavens!
I wish those days they didn’t stop
Because every single one was a holiday
Bringing with it its share of surprises
I was like an astronaut in orbit
Defying the laws of gravity
I was as light as a leaf
Carried along by the wind
I was pure and innocent
I was carefree and dreamy
I was green and yellow
When I think about those moments
They make me recall my days in
All the cities I’ve settled down
Each of them nurtured me
And gave shape to who I am
Amazed by the nature and inspired by the culture of Sédhiou
Oh Sédhiou! The green and the calm
You have been my first contact with nature
And I still smell the scent of the grass after the rain
I still remember the songs you taught me
And I took them with me to Nioro
Nioro the historical!
I have been fascinated by your history
You have been my first classroom
For you taught me my first syllables
And I have been lulled by your “Ngoyane” songs
I have been blessed by God
For He gave me the opportunity
To experience wonderful things
In heavenly places
And each of them is nesting
In a particular corner inside of my heart
Representing the secret wonderland
Where I go back whenever I miss my dear childhood

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
As I walk through the valley of darkness
I realize that I am not alone
There is a light inside me
Guiding me through the gloomy night
I feel like someone is walking by my side
My heart my mind and my soul are in peace
For I know that there is no need to be afraid
God makes me feel stronger
He makes me feel my faith.
Yes I can feel it
Yes I can touch it
My heart is full of joy
A joy I can’t describe
I thank God
I praise God
I pray God to keep guiding me in my life
And showing me the right way
Temptation is surrounding me
But with the help of God
I’ll be saved.

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
There is too much hypocrisy in our society
How can you be saved?
You get involved in that game of pretending
At first you tell yourself: come on
It’s just a game act as if you were in theatre
All you have to do is to play a part
And then you begin acting like everybody
And telling yourself that it’s just a game and nothing else
So you go on acting and pretending
During the whole process you try to convince yourself that it’s just a game
In which you have to perform because you want to be conform to society
But one day, you find yourself
Trapped inside the boxes of your own society
Because you realize that you are more than an actor
And the theatre turns out to be reality
You lose control because
You get used to that game of pretending and hypocrisy
You become addicted to that game and unable to make the difference
Between reality and fiction
You tell yourself wait a minute: “I played and I lost”
You were trying to do like everybody because you didn’t want to be isolated
You didn’t want to be criticised
But at the end you fall into your own trap
You find yourself hypocrite
Because you didn’t react on time and refuse to be conform
You didn’t take your responsibility vis-à-vis your society
You were not strong enough to make your own choice
You have been weak
And here are the consequences
You are just like everybody
Is there a way for you to be yourself in that kind of society?
Are you courageous enough to go against these well established rules of your society?
Either to act like everybody and live in peace
Or to be true to yourself, assume your choice and then be isolated
Which one to choose?

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Spotlight on her!
Come and stare at the shinning star
Some don’t believe what they see
What a metamorphosis!
It can’t be! How come?
Others just say: “never underestimate someone
The power of change is nesting inside of all of us
You just need to stimulate it
And it can arise at any time
We all can take the road of success
And be victorious regardless of the troubles
Capacities and abilities are present in all of us
It’s like a flower growing from the within
So water it and let it glow
We’ve all got something to give
We’ve all got a gift to offer
We all must add our contribution
To the building of the society
It’s like a puzzle and each one got a small piece
We’ve all got a parcel of light
That can brighten up the world
We’ve all got a history to teach
Because others can learn a lot from us
So as small as your story or your contribution might be
Never underestimated it
For you never know the value of that treasure”.

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Just like a seed
you are small and filled with hope
For you are to grow and feed the world
You are precious and priceless
you are innocent and pure
I know you are the sunshine of your parents
But for me you are the light that has touched my soul
Leaving an imprint of tolerance and love
For me you are a school
And I have gained so much from you
How can this little angle has that impact in my life!
You help me purify my heart
You taught me patience and acceptance
You taught me unconditional love
you increase my faith in God
When I am tired and want to give up
When I look at your smiling face
I regain power
I’m so fond of you
And your joy, despite your young age and suffering
makes me know that life is worth living no matter what happens
And that there is always hope we better thank God for all we have
I know all that happen was meant to be
Just hope that this experience will better my life and make me a better person
Be safe little angel and pray that all this will be soon part of the past

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
In the kingdom of love and passion
I find my feelings trapped in a mansion
A golden mansion haunted by a ghost’s spirit
Who unfold a web into my own spirit
Preventing my mind from thinking right
Veiling my eyes who no longer see the light
My heart seems to be a party to this plot
For he is ready to act and enjoy himself at any cost
Leaving me alone with fears and doubts
And I am afraid to let them out
It seems like they are playing a trick on me
And I am tempted to act even though a voice is warning me
Contradictory feelings take residence into my mind
Some are telling me to let go because I will be fine
While others are telling me to take it slow
Before I fall into deep sorrow
But how to resist this sweet taste of happiness
When it wraps my heart with warmth and tenderness

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Naive like a teen in love
You sheltered her in your cove
For in that rainy night
You were her only light
She was lost and desperate
Alone and abandoned to her fate
You helped her dry her tears
And fight back her fears
You have been sincere and truthful
Loyal and faithful
You healed her pain
For she was your friend
But like the collapse of a realm
You wake up abruptly from your dream
She used your kindness as a dagger
And stabbed you in the back like a mugger
You have been betrayed in the name of jealousy
Your yesterday friend did the felony
She was digging the ground underneath your foot
Like killing a tree by cutting its main root
You were not aware of her real intention
And you were not expecting that deception
From the one you were helping,
A friend who was suffering
So you fall in her trap and ended up with scars
She took you by surprise; you were not protected like in a war
Now you stay here wondering why she didn’t treat you fairly
Since you helped her when she was down and treated her kindly

Ndeye Khare Ndiaye Poem
Joy of my life
You are my best friend
The only one who can heal my pain,
My umbrella under the rain
You are dear to me
I just want to keep you with me
Because you spread the good mood all around me
You make me feel like a glowing flower
Shining at any hour
You make me regain power
I know sometimes we have some disconnection
But we are going to bring back the connection
So as to maintain our close relation
My life is nothing without you
I need nothing if I just have you
What a beautiful chemistry! Just me and you
