Elson Lee Poem
It is early one morning,
and you are making love to me.
Sunshine is streaming through the curtains
and I am disinterested in your ministrations.
I wonder
if we could ever be soft people.
Lazily enjoying the sunshine,
stretched out on our picnic blanket.
There is a plate of sandwiches between us,
half of them have been eaten.
We are comfortably full,
and you don’t take it the wrong way.
There is a pitcher of sweet tea,
you tell me you found it tangled up
in the roots of your family tree.
You lean in to kiss me,
and it is gentle
and you don’t use your tongue.
You feel like August, you know.
One glorious ending to a beautiful summer.
But the summer was hot and humid
I was nothing if not miserable,
but I’ll always miss the summer we spent together,
sunburnt to hell
with your hand upon my throat.
You are mad at me,
I cannot perform in the way you wish,
you cry and blame yourself
It’s because you are not pretty enough,
Not feminine enough.
you say this is important
the ultimate way to express our love
I close my eyes
and dare to wonder
When did love become so violent?

Elson Lee Poem
Wednesday, August twenty-fourth, 2022
One day, while I was sitting,
biting my nails,
I had a silly thought,
So I got out my phone
and I asked if you wanted to make a paper airplane
You said “sure,
why not?”
So we got our papers together
and laughed for an hour before we actually got to work.
I told you about my home
upon green mountains
deep in the south
and how we fold airplanes where I come from
and in turn, you brought cookies,
but you called them biscuits.
And when we finished
our airplane didn’t look like everyone else’s
it won't win any prizes
or change any lives.
But we made it together,
we laughed and smiled the whole time.
It’s beautiful
and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
Even if that means it won't really fly.

Elson Lee Poem
I’m sorry little sister.
dear sister,
Please forgive me for my sins,
and be careful going forward.
Sleep well, little sister.
Have you eaten yet today?
You’re too young to mistreat your body.
Eat well
do not worry.
I’m here, I will protect you.
You are smart, dear sister,
brave too.
You could do what I do.
Don’t be afraid, I’ll be with you.
Please be calm, dear sister.
Are you sad?
Are you going to be sick?
It was a trick, dear sister.
I’m sorry, I was in need.
Will you be okay, dear sister?

Elson Lee Poem
Fingers in my hair, you’ll
Pull and turn me feral.
I’m young and stupid,
Still apologizing for the things you did
to me. To my body.
You tore open and called me ‘hottie’
