Despair

Every afternoon at 12:24
Dwell the long gray moments in the middle
Bewildered and lost in a dark tunnel
With no merciful light on either side
Five days a week just at 12:24
Dwell relentless wormlike tickings of time
And every time I look, hoping for hope
The cold face always says 12:24
Stuck in the road, rolled into the gutter
Down to a silent screeching stop, and I
Can’t go forwards or not even backwards
Time’s cruel trick leaves me at 12:24
In some years it might be 12:55
And heaven’s trumpets sing Oh glory! But
Every afternoon at 12:24
I despair.

Missing Face

Disappointment
Sinking slowly when
All I see isn't him
That expected face
Long-awaited, even
Promised
No warning
No justification, just
Gone
His missing face
Steals my joy
His missing face
Builds my frustration
His missing face
Snuffs my hopes for today
And raises my hopes for tomorrow

Bad Day

Jumbled dreams
Delayed start
Green light, go!
Early rush, fresh
Sunny day and a stroke of luck
Routine maintained and broken
Return and pause, then
Shattered expectations
Persistence ground into crumbs
Obligatory toil
Conceding tolerance, now
A new journey to improve
Disappointment of falling short
Corrective suggestion spurned
Eyes blur and lids droop
Anger and disdain, now
Return to leave again
Welcomed sustenance and companionship
Consider imminent possibilities
Confident arrival, then
Hopes extinguished
Joys of the day forgotten
Only failure and disappointment
No justification
Only bleak exhaustion
Disenchanted return
Bury my unshed tears, and
Hope for a better tomorrow

Glance

The smile lights his eyes
Eyebrows raise
He looks at me and
His eyes laugh at me
Because he knows
I love him too

Tonight

Hoping he'll be there today
Not knowing if he's gone
Dreaming of the words he'll say
If I see him tonight
