Just a Shade

Black like the midnight sky with no stars to shine.
Black like the charcoal that covers the chimney floor.
Black, the color of my favorite sweater.
Black, the color of my best friend.

What is the difference between her and I?
Besides my skin being a few shades lighter, I see no other modifier.
She is beautiful, and she is smart.
She shines brighter than any star,
Sparkling like a diamond amidst the dust.

Yet, the world does not focus on what her life brings,
Only on her skin tone- a meaningless thing.
Something so small, just a shade,
Makes the biggest difference in this time and age.
In past, present, and future, her life is unstable.
Simply because no man is able
To see her for what she truly is- God’s beautiful creation.
A paragon, the perfect picture of His prolific power.

Where I'M From

I am from climbing trees,
from digging for maggots in my backyard and building a playground for my brother’s turtles.
I am from frozen Stouffer’s Mac n Cheese and homemade ziti.
I am from field trips to the fire station,
from family camping trips and “My Little Teapot.”
I am from “Puff the Magic Dragon”,
from “Stinky Face” books and memorizing “Brave Martha.”

I am from worship songs and weekly Sunday school,
from Jonah in the Whale and Noah’s Ark.
I am from a piano teaching mom and a brother who picked up every instrument.
I am from a cat we fed Cocoa Puffs and soy milk,
from a dog we adopted from the shelter because I had no friends.
I am from trips to my grandma’s house as we passed “big dogs” that mooed.
I am from putting up the Christmas tree after Thanksgiving and Dollar Tree Secret Santa.

I am from burning eucalyptus candles,
from sticky notes and Bible verses I tape to my wall.
I am from “stubborn and spoiled,”
from “You’re too loud!” and “Hard to love.”
but truly, I am from “Fearfully and wonderfully made.”
I am from desire,
a desire to encourage and uplift,
a desire to love others like I want to be loved,
and a desire for growth.

But most proudly, I am from God my Creator,
from my Father in Heaven to whom I say, “Hallowed by thy name.”
He has given me a purpose,
a purpose to be on mission for Him,
to pour my heart out in leading worship,
to disciple those younger than me,
to teach children,
but most importantly, to love those around me.

Who Is This Man

I was doing my simple task,
Drawing water from the well.
A man I did not recognize appeared, asking for a drink,
Yet he had nothing to draw water.
I could tell instantly that he was a Jew.
But what was a Jew doing talking to me,
A female Samaritan?
This is against custom.
He mentions a living water that could satisfy my thirst.
How this “living water” is possible, I do not know,
But I do know I want it.
He asks me to get my husband,
Yet he knows I do not have a husband.
He knows I have had five husbands.
How would he know this about me if we’ve never met?
Maybe he is a prophet.
How he speaks astounds me.
He speaks of my sins with such love in his voice,
But how could someone love me despite my many husbands?
This is true unconditional love.
Could this be the Messiah?
In amazement, I abandoned my water at the well.
I wish the whole world to be acquainted with this man of wonder.
