Below

On nights of gloom and storm and rain
On nights that fill a mind with pain
On nights entombed with blackened rain
I stare into the dark below
When left alone from misered comp'ny
When left alone by Him above me
When left alone with only mem'ry
I gaze into the dark below

What say the man that stare unblinking
What way his eye flit whilst unthinking
Where goes the mind of man whom peer
Into the blackened void below?
He wipes away a tired feeling
Tries to grasp railing, yet reeling
Back and back on down the staircase
And into the dark below

Blankly, windows gaze turned ghastly
For fear what sort o' gorgon might have me
What clouded, murky horror gladly
Waits for me below?
Struck by the sound of nails clawing
Upon my ears and the walls theyre longing
And unto me be its desire
To drag me down below

In my fright I reached and groped
And struck out, such a wishful probe
I swung at nothing, seeing nothing
My curiosity surely must grow
I light a match and brace myself
Draw a gasp and clutch my chest
Do my eyes deceive me?
I find that I'm alone
