The Last Love Letter

I have promised you everything in the world
But I cannot promise that this
Will be my last love letter to you.

I will write this sonnet
To you
Though you will never read it.

I'm sorry that our end
Came this way
We cannot change our fates.

I will say farewell to
Your memory by way of a
Viking funeral.

Our love will burn forever
Until it reaches the shores of Valhalla

Swollen River

The swollen river
River birds drift to the sea
A heron flys past

The Legend of the Blue Hills

The blue hills are always there
Always on the edge
Below the sand dune
Clouds
Above
The blue hills are always there
Waiting to be climbed
Crossed
Conquered
They seek to challenge
One's compassion
They are there
Uncrossable yet destined to
Be crossed
Following
The elephantine footsteps
Of Hannibal.
You can reach the blue hills
If you keep
Moving towards them
Step by step by step
Your march
Your parade
Your pilgrimage
Will reach these mystic hills
Climb the summit
Beyond is the world
And beyond the world are the blue hills
The blue hills are always there
Waiting to be climbed
There will always be more hills
Always
Always
Always
You can conquer one
Then the next
The next
Next
They will continue coming
Do not fight the mountain
The hills will always win
What is our choice is
Whether we acknowledge
That the hills are eternal
And stop because we cannot win this fight
Or
Keep walking
Climb every mountain
Because the next one will always be there
See every view
Embrace each wind
And fall in love with the eternal sky
Above the blue hills

Ode of the Magnolia

Velvet purple bloom
Rest upon thy perch of moss
Sweet little blossom

The Blossom

Listen sweet blossom,
Your petals are destined to fall.
Listen to the rain.

The Silence In the Garden

This morning is perfect silence
And all the world is a garden.
The greying wooden bench upon which
I sit is still slightly damp from last
Night's rain, but was mostly
Sheltered by the brick arches of the
Museum's facade behind me.
A grove of giant ferns dances to a
Silent tune of the wind,
Rustling leaves.
Statues pose around me,
Like me, they do not move and no one
Notices when they do.
Green iron lamp posts guard the
Empty garden, waiting for darkness
To engulf the garden.
Squirrels run across the grass and moss
Searching for fallen acorns from
The oak trees towering above them
Above me
Above the lamp posts
Above the brick buildings
Who wall this bower of the
Silent garden.
In the silent garden there is no
Need for sound,
It is a monastery
Only the sweet and ancient chanting of
The earth and spirits and demons and gods
Is heard
If you silence your mind and listen to the
Silence of this ancient song.
Three cried of a hawk spinning in the sky
The rustling of leaves
The clicking of squirrels mouths
The creak of trees dancing in the
Tuneless wind.
The dances in the dirt of ferns and stone
Statues.
The distant sirens leaking into the silence
Like rainwater from a full bucket.
Grey clouds shroud and soften the
Silent garden.
The greying wooden bench
Is still damp from last night's rain
And I smell the scent of rain
On moss and ferns
Warning me that I must soon leave this bench
And return to the world of men
The world of sound
The world of warmth
The world of light
The world without rain
The world without dancing ferns
World without green iron lamp posts
Without silences
Oak trees
Rustling squirrels
Stone statues
I must leave the garden
But one can always
Come back to the garden.

The Warrior

The Warrior
9-22-2020

Hold your breath steady
Mighty warrior
Hold your weapon steady
Mighty warrior
Hold your heart and soul and courage strong
Mighty warrior
Hold yourself with steady strength
And you will come home to me
You will come home to me
I pray you come home safe and sound
But I will tend your wounds
And stop your tears
And if you don't return
No army could stand in my way

Trinet Number One

Dusk falls Clouds gather Beyond the walls of the garden A silence awaits the first rainstorm The first Darkness was Not night Eternal flames Arise from Three dozen beacons atop the wall Darkness falls with the steady rain The garden Beasts hide Under trees The statues Of fabled Heroes have not noticed the storm Stone watches the earth without breath Shrouded stars Dusk falls

The City of Dead Men

The city of dead men.
Her neighbor is Repentance.

The father of the town was
Shot at his own front door
By a rival on horseback.

The horse bucked at the sound.
Her rider drowned in the well
Which he was thrown into.

A school was built on the site
Of a campfire.
The ghostly embers had never
Been extinguished from memory.
The school stood for a year before
She was burned by an angered pupil.

The library stands naked before
The middle of the town. Never dressed
With literature and unused in
Her goose pimpled body.

One street light: never lit.
The one man would could complete her
Wires was hung for theft
Before his job was done.

Wind beaten people live there.
Never in the past, never in the future, never
There. You can't find it
On a map.

The city of dead men.
Her neighbor is Repentance.

The road between two towns has yet to be walked.

If the Rubik's Cube Was Round

No wrong way
Turn around
There!
One side is done!
Now, onto the next one…
Wait
There's only one side
Oh…
There's only one color
oh...
Over so soon?
Toss the sphere back onto the desk.

Novelty is not practicality

Time to go back to the
Cube
More colors
More choices
Keeps me busy for longer
And it's more fun
