Flight

Flight
by Lady Quill

As a child I could fly
I raced clouds and chased the rain
I helped Superman turn
Turn back time
Turn back our hearts
I flew a crooked path, stumbling
my way to small feats
A bumbling heroism
sweeter for its faults
Still in love with Earth.

As I grew I watched others fly.
Sam who loved America
but couldn't stand by
as we burn.
Angels performing stunts
Turns and twists at marvelous speeds
I dreamt of shooting through the sky.
The shuttle which carried my dreams,
my thoughts beyond the tiny house,
the small room,
the Earthbound life.

Long since I was a child,
I must re-learn the gifts of flight
Not just to watch
Not to appreciate
But to take up the will
To understand again the majesty of clouds
and speed and heaven given eyes
reluctant to return to Earth.

To don again the cape
And have no fear
of leaping, of falling, of failing.
The broken and ungainly flight
lacking grace yet wholely blessed
Is still a feat of truth
a hero's journey
a cry of faith and fear alike into the void.

Grace and fear
Floating and crashing
Only to fly again
Ephemeral moments of utter glory.

Internal Strings

The two are slow and inelegant.
But the orchestra retains its complex symphony
angry string section
violins of summer heat.

Frenetically mating in the season of apartness
four or six or more
freedom of so many steps.
Two are constrained
can barely become four.

Not a simple merger of feeling and taking;
driven to connect those bringing more
seek so much less.

Perfunctory; easily satisfied
not yearning for understanding
grasping only for feeling

And still we must have meaning.
We must be seen and understood
not just answering a mindless drive -
lesser need uncoupled with emotion.
