Thinking of My Beijing Friends On July 7

We missed the Lugou Bridge moon of the morning
Seeing only the engraved emperor's brush writing
This site where China and Japan exchanged fire
How many times have we visited there?
Rain falls and makes me playful to play with the rain
The day comes and reminds me to remember it again
How I wish to pay another visit to the hallowed ground
And there, my current city forgotten, I will not turn around.

1978,7,7

July the 7th is the anniversary of the conflict between China and Japan in 1937, which marked the beginning of Resisting-Japanese War

First Rain In Monterey Winter

Gloomy's the yard covered with fallen leaves
Winter's coldness comes with winds wet with rains
Lonely souls dread most the lengthy cold nights
A quick-paced life about thin frosts complains
A cocoon imprisons the silkworm tight
Burnt out candles waste their flickering light
The empty house is a daily sad thing
Only the beauty's worshiped in painting

After the Team Building Party

Merriment gone like smoke, loneliness sets in.
Worse than that one feels when living alone.
A look at the stage
Finds it empty with draping curtain.
who knows
who knows
Where do her chamber windows close?

Inspiration From a Dam On a River

Inspiration from a Dam on a River

West of the dam is the serene lake
East of the dam is the roaring fall
White and green jades clash and clank
Fury waves to the sky angrily call
Horses at night gallop away on the snow
At sunrise nowhere to be found at all
A bridge, deserted and empty, stand tall

Admirable though the excitement is
Better is to follow the rushing river
Turning away from riches of today
Seeking the splendor of the future
Some trace must man leave in this world
Don’t just wait for the fish to bite the bate
Surrounded by kids the white haired man at home
Will envy the achievements others have made

Scholars in college, girls with talent
They cry over their poor discomfort
How stupid for them to blame others
When they do not want to make an effort?
Giving up their great expectation
They indulge in money and flirtation
A nest-less eagle will soar far and high
An old hen is always her chicks bound by

Before the spring comes one should plan for the year
To go on a journey far you better first ready your gear
Like a river you should roll on into the heaven
Washing away all the old stuff to make the world clean

Seeing Off My Guests

Fast wind sees off a dying year
The sense of fall strong
Hurriedly I see off my guests to my hometown
The Double Ninth Day is near
I wish my friends to cheer

Eking out a living as alien here
Has cost me half a year
Nice teachers I see everywhere
What a book of lessons dear
I read The Story of A Stone to my ear

Spring

Snowy pear blossoms
And rosy peach flowers
Skirt the green hills
Overnight came the news
Of spring with mooing cows
And bleating goats

If You Are Destined To Have It

If you’re destined to have it, it will come
If you’re destined to miss it, stay calm
This I say with ease but my heart is hard to appease
Her shadow haunts my mind and does not cease

I desire not her serving wine brow high
I desire not holding her sleeve standing nigh
If only she could greet me with a how do you do
Oh, my fair lady, I won’t mind dwindling for you

Lonely Am I

Looking at fine plants from the window
In the morning light. I see agave and cactus growing high
Weeds in the garden are left free to grow
Dill plants complete to reach to the sky

Lonely am I
Sadder is my dream
I exhaust my sorrowful mind to write a poem
Done, but which beauty to give to?
I open the window to hear the cuckoo

On Veterans Day

For this holiday I have nowhere to go
Around me are all common roads, what a puzzle
No guest comes to chat about house chores
On bare rocky shore are seen many a squirrel

End of the year should see a long journey
But where to go? And it’s hard to find someone for me
I should go down to the deep south for a revisit
And savor lobsters, alien music and dances maybe

Self Lament

A lazy me has ignored my Taiji sword long
For work I still to the Presidio march on
From buildings I watch the white waves of the sea
From sand beaches I hear them as well as the seals
On Soldier Field, a parade of troops I can see

Years passed by as fast as an arrow
Surprising how much white hair I grow
Too many vexing thoughts in my mind
I doubt I’m a man of scholastic kind
In life I’ve been but a man blind
