Harry Meikle Poem
Oh, to be in Deutschland
Now that Adolf’s there.
For whoever wakes in Deutschland
Finds some morning, unaware,
There’s a knocking on the apartment door.
The Gestapo says you’re outside the law :
There’s a blinding flash as they break your
jaw.
In Deutschland -- now.

Harry Meikle Poem
The old man peers at his photograph ,
Looking at the boy he used to be.
“Smile ! – Say cheese “ , says the photographer ,
The youngster murmurs , blandly , "Camembert"
And looks intently at the camera ,
The moment made eternal with a click.
The man looks at the image of his past ;
His image looks back ,from the page.
He sees the picture of his long ago.
The image views its future through a lens.
