Trying To Sleep

The light from the window
danced on the wall
Projecting the branches of the tree outside
Like a painting in the dark.
My melatonin wasnt working
So I watched the light
And I thought about
California, and Idaho,
And Italy, and Egypt
Until I finally fell asleep

Eating Oysters

The tray comes out
I choose my first
I lift the shell to my mouth
Splash! A foamy spray of brine smashes against the rocks, sending arcs of water far onto the shore. I chew a few times, and swallow with the juice. The tide recedes back again.
I wait a moment
Sip my root beer
Eying the plate,
choosing another
I grab the shell
pause with my lips
To the edge of the
Ocean.
Whoosh! A sea bird dives into the surf, scanning for the glints of fish. As it glides beneath the surface, the twisting torrent of waves above pulls it back up. At the last moment it snatches up a stray perch. The salty lump slides down smooth.
Again, I wait.
Another sip.
Two is enough, I think.
Two, unadulterated
tastes of the sea
I cant say I like them
But im glad I tried
Maybe its an acquired taste

Poncho

I used to have a friend named Poncho.
We would walk to school every day.
There was a vending machine that sold pop tarts 2 to a pack.
We always split one after school.

In the winter, we’d throw snowballs at the people we knew.
In the summer, we’d walk in the grass beside the path,
And piss off the dogs with stories and ideas

But then we went to different high schools,
And I only saw him in the mornings while he waited for his bus.

Then he dropped out, and I barely saw him at all.

I know he has a car
I know hes working somewhere
But Im states away
And I will be for a while.

I think its likely that Ill never see him again.

Galaxies

when the sun hits the sand just right
millions of galaxies are created in the dust
a cloud may delete them
the wind may blow them away
someone may smash them with their boot
but the galaxies return at the right angle
a new constellation with every hour of the day

Food Network

the food looks good
cheese on things
peas and beer
the food looks good
toast and oysters
sauce on beef
a darkly browned, crispy
cut of chicken with rice
the food looks good

Smell the Ocean

the wet earth smells
like the sea
the rotting roots of plants
like the oily skin of fish
but im close to the sea,
two miles at most
so Ill say I can smell it,
no matter what it really is.

Borrowed

It has backwash floating in it,
But Ill still drink the muck, the guck, the grit
The spit doesnt make it much weaker, does it
There's not much left of this clear $&@$

Its in a goddamn plastic bottle too
Its the cheap stuff he tends to choose
I dont care, itll all get used
Maybe tonight, Ill meet my muse

Running Late

smoke wafted up
from my worried lips
my phone was dead
starbucks doesnt have outlets
we had run for 5 miles that day
so the extra few
i ran to get home
didnt matter much
the people stared at the musty youth
running in flat shoes

i bet they saw some deadbeat hoodlum in the night
Im a killer without a sense of direction
the same thing I guess

Sardines

imagine the sardines
in the tube
swimming round and round
against an unceasing
mock current
do they know their place?
Doomed to live as an aquatic chandelier
as perpetual showmen for the sake of our “knowledge”
Do they know?
Im terrified to think that they might not,
because then maybe we dont either.
