Bittersweet, a Paradelle for Autumn Note: form invented by poet laureate Billy Collins

BITTERSWEET (A PARADELLE FOR AUTUMN)

Gone is the bird song that once filled the sky
Gone is the bird song that once filled the sky
Now the wind moans low like lovers in need
Now the wind moans low like lovers in need
In need like a lover, that once filled the sky
Gone is the bird now like a low moan of wind

We have gleaned from the earth its bountiful fruit
We have gleaned from the earth its bountiful fruit
The fields are empty, the harvest is in
The fields are empty, the harvest is in
In the harvest gleaned of its bountiful fruit
From the earth we have empty fields

The leaves are beautiful in their dying
The leaves are beautiful in their dying
This is the swan song of earth
This is the swan song of earth
In their swan song dying
the leaves of earth are beautiful

The sky we have gleaned, empty as bird song
fields the leaves beautifully, in the harvest
dying, bountiful fruit gone, once
of earth in need like a lover’s swan song
filled by the low moans of wind

Long Ago Road Trip

long ago
the last time I saw you…
                                      and far away

                                      road trip
                                      her embrace lingers,
                                      her eyes grow moist

Boreas, the North Wind

Boreas, the North Wind

I am in Iceland, 90 miles from the Arctic Circle,
walking through a gorge in a valley between
European and North American plates. Fierce
Boreas funnels its headstrong wind right at me
tears my knit hat off my head, rakes my hair.

I’m in Rekjavik, at the city’s highest point
walking half-way between Hallgrimskirja Church
and Leif Eriksons’ statue when Boreas sends a gust
ripping glasses from my face. I chase them across
the square, miraculously retrieve them intact.

The is a land of extremes, powerful geysers,
roiling rivers, cascading waterfalls, high mountains,
floating icebergs, volcanoes, poised to erupt, lava
flows, one thermal Blue Lagoon, acres in size
defies frigid air, soothes sore muscles.

This is a land ruled by the North Wind Boreas, erratic,
hungry, sleeping rarely, it is terrifying, exhilarating,
                            raw as life itself.

Vernal Equinox

Vernal Equinox

This is a day for picking up
that cast-aside poetry book
about dreams deferred, its clarity
a balm to your chafing heart.

This is a day for cabernet or single
malt scotch, as you sit, dressed in
flannel PJs beside a crackling fire.

Let the day-long rain clean windows
wash streets, coax roots, feed seeds,
kiss buds keen to burst into blossoms.

Let Winter’s protracted discontent pass
and Spring give birth to hope.

Day in Night

Day in Night

Starlit diamonds pinprick opaque night
and planets punctuate darkness. The Milky
Way in clear desert skies traverses a distant
galaxy. The perfect orb moon, earth’s companion
refuses to surrender her bright beacon at night,
does so only reluctantly, in fingernail phases.
Her lunar light pierces clouds to kiss moving
waves, cast shadows on all she may touch.

Fireflies flicker, snowy owls hoot, cream blanches
coffee, till dawn reclaims cerulean skies.
