My Dog, Benbow

Somewhere beside the myrtle rose blooming white
By nutgrass overgrown, a palm tree sways in soft moonlight
Like an angel from the throne, and somewhere there
In your long forgotten bed sleep your bones alone
And though distant, for childhood I almost feel a tear
Benbow lies forgotten there, the first dog I ever owned

Some evening when the light was dim, without a call
He took his place at the front steps, surveying all
No more bones for him, no more sleight of teasing throw
No more joy to see him stand, fore legs paddling the air
Hind legs secure on the ground, then spinning to show
Dexterity, rolled on his back to our gleeful cheer.

My father named him for the English admiral those days
Gave him as hero, the sea dogs of Great England’s praise
Are but distant mist to me, but not my dear Benbow
My trusted dog, my loyal friend, ran over by a car
And leaving vacations behind returned a little low
Benbow was not there to leap and greet, his only czar.

I never owned another dog since, never could replace
The love I bore for my Benbow, a scrub exalted by its grace
When hunting mongoose in pingwing patch, or scaring
The clever kestrels from its swooping flight to spare
The hen house its tragic day. The time staccato barking
In four-part harmony is gone, the porch is sadly bare.

No Benbow will ever chase again a fleet footed boy
Gurgling fountains of joy, O how these memories annoy
My soul, time reaping our happiness first, and then us
Stripping our best possessions away, making us naked
Before returning us to barren bowels of brimless dust.
What had my dog to do with sin or fate among the wicked?

O Benbow, and old man needs a friend to walk at nights
A little boy needed a dog to be undefeated in all his fights.

Filbert Gets His Wish

Filbert Crumb..... Gets His Wish!

A sad little man was Filbert Crumb....as he sat on the bus. "
Another lonelyday" He thought to himself.
Looking up, Filbert saw a little dog.
Neatly tucked into a little girls backpack.
Its' head was peaking out
and smiled at Filbert.

"See, even a dog has a better life than me"...
"I wish I was that little dog".
Filbert reached out to pet the pooch
in the backpack
and was surprised when the little dog
happily licked at his fingers.

“Hi there little doggie, How are you?”
And then the strangest thing happened.
The little dog replied back!

“I am wonderful..”
“Did you just speak to me?”
whispered Filbert to the little dog.

“Yep...Yep...Yep...I did!” said the little dog.
“But how is that possible?” asked Filbert.
“I really don't know, I am just as surprised as you are.” said the little dog.
“Are you happy being a little dog?” asked filbert.
“Oh yes, it's wonderful. I have a nice home, good food
and toys to play with”.

“I wish I were a dog.”
“Oh, you can be.
It's really very simple to do.”
Said the little dog with a wink.....
“All you have to do is this....

“Jump Up and Down on just one leg...
and spin yourself a round....
around and round......
and spin yourself around”....
Sang the little dog.
.“Really! Is that all?” said Sad Filbert.

Yep...Yep...Yep....said the little dog.

The neighbours went off on their yearly vacation,
Off to visit some foreign nation.
Leaving me keys and a list a mile long,
To watch their pets. What could go wrong?

The rottweiler is a gentle soul
As long as there's always food in her bowl.
The trick is filling it as quick as can be,
So you need to be fast, faster than me.

The birds take pride in emptying their dishes
All over the floor, and then there's the fishes.
So there's food and water and then food again,
Making sure there's enough to last until when

The next day begins and we start it anew.
I'm told there's a cat. Really! Who knew?
If there is , it certainly keeps itself hid.
It's like playing hide and seek with some little kid.

Walking the dog has become quite a chore.
She sees the leash and runs for the door.
After being dragged two miles the walk finally starts.
The dog is immense, she should be pulling carts.

Back to the house and the hide and seek game.
If there is a cat, it doesn't come to it's name.
The birds are now staring at their seeds on the floor.
I refuse to refill the dishes as I head to the door.

So this daily ritual will last another week
And I'll keep trying to win the game of hide and seek.
Thank goodness their vacation only comes once a year.
After watching the pets ....I could sure use a beer.

Where Is This Dog Mania Headed

Where Is This Dog Mania Headed?

By Elton Camp

When people call dogs “their children” it make me curious
If they are speaking metaphorically, or they may be serious
Some actually go so far their great love of their dogs to prove
To base their house purchase on whether the dog will approve

If Bowser gets sick, many thousands they will gladly spend
To see if the ailing mutt can be restored to good health again
Companies find a ready market for health insurance for a pet
To me, that shows how unbalanced this pet worship can get

So, why bother to resist? Dress your so-precious cur in a suit
Get him glasses so he can see better and look especially cute
And when Bowser loses the battle and finally passes away,
Put thousands in a casket, vault, and cemetery for him to stay

So certainly after all this and they money that you’ve spent
Get some preacher who will claim that it’s to heaven he went
Even now good old Bower is trotting down the celestial street
While he sprays with urine every fireplug that he does meet

Some angry reader will say, “It’s nothing to you what I do,”
And I will be quick to admit that what you say is very true
I am merely attempting to appeal to common sense a tiny bit
Your Bowser is really nothing but a dog, so don’t have a fit

Dogs

Man's best friend, we cannot argue that
Will protect all, even if they have to die
Lick and kiss you when you come home drunk
You can't expect that out of a old cat
And it hard to make a pet out if a butter fly
Don't even think about parading around with a skunk

A Chiuahua his mind, thinks he is junk yard dog mean
But their annoying back makes them a good watch dog
Just a plain hound dog loves a good bone
Poodles at a dog show , one of the best to be seen
Coon dogs will get a rabbit out of a log
Any dog, you can't beat them when you are along

They are happy, when wagging their tail
When growling, ifI was you might want to stand back
When snapping they will bite
They seem to get mad at the man carrying the mail
And don't think that a sleeping dog will not attack
Go from zero to sixty when they get on the fight

When you have done something wrong you are in the dog house
When a dog sleeps in the house, he is looking at your bed
And then you will howl
Leave it to them okd cats to catch a mouse
They will come no matter what you call them, "come on Red"
Every dog I have ever had, was my best pal

Buddy and Baily

Buddy the dog and Baily the cat
were the best of friends,
you'll see them cuddled up together
when the daytime ends

One day they went outside to play
wandered off into the woods,
they came across a babbling brook
they'd cross it if they could

Buddy heard a voice come from a tree
and smiled at what he saw,
the voice he heard was Spike the Squirrel
saying," to cross the water use that log"

Spike the Squirrel, came down the tree
and asked them both their names,
"I'm Buddy the dog,I'm Baily the cat
"you're Spike the Squirrel you say"

Spike the Squirrel showed them the way
to get across the brook,
they all went across the log
a minute was all it took

The hours seemed to speed away
for the three new friends,
Buddy the dog, and Baily the cat
wished the day would not end

They said goodbye to their friend Spike
as they went on their way,
Buddy the dog and Baily the cat
would come back again some day!

Look for more adventures from Buddy and Baily yet to come.........Taz

Jacksons Walk In the Park

Jackson took a walk one day,
in the City's central park
The first thing that Jackson saw,
was a stunning meadowlark

As he sauntered down the path,
to the pretty little pond
Jackson smelled the hot dog stand,
of which he was so fond

Every time that Jackson came,
walking in the park
He knew he'd get a hot dog,
with his happy little bark

Mr. Jones the hot dog man,
would give his head a pat
and give to him a hot dog,
and tip his white chef's hat

Now that Jackson's bellies full
he went about his way
He'd get another hot dog,
when he came another day

He came upon the pretzel man,
his name was Mr. True
Who said " hello there Jackson,"
" here's a pretzel just for you"

Jackson, so enjoyed his daily walk,
in the City's central park
It's time that he was heading home,
for soon it will be dark

Now Jackson's home all safe and sound,
and snuggled in his bed
with visions of a hot dog,
dancing in his head.

He Is Still Just a Dog

He Is Still Just a Dog

By Elton Camp

It’s obvious that you think your dog’s mighty fine
From the way you boast of his amazing bloodline
And with the American Kennel Club he is on the list
To show his registration papers you always insist

To ever so many dog shows you and Jacque will go
You think the judges will say that he’s best in show
Even if he should somehow manage to fool them
I’ve seen too much to be overly impressed with him

For at the park I saw that Jacques was still inclined
Get a big whiff of the odor of another mutt’s behind
To think he’s special, you own self you are tricking
Because afterward I saw what it was he was licking

If he is so fancy, then you would surely want to think
That from the bathroom toilet he wouldn’t take a drink
Although you believe that your dog is so sophisticated,
To all of those lesser curs, his actions show he’s related

My Profession

I went to school for dog training and to groom
I wanted to be the best
mistakes, in this field,
there is no room,
and your always put to the test,
My teachers,
they were hard on me,
The speaches,
on equipment and safety,
learning all the different hair cuts,
to give these wonderful mutts,
each dog,
different, a little bit,
It took me a while,
I have to admit,
they all have to look great,
you can't run late,
sometimes a dog will get a nick,
you have to know what to do,
and you can't panic,
cause dogs, they feel through you,
but at the end of the day,
when the dogs look soooooo good,
would I go through it all again?
why yes, I suppose I would.

Fleas

The cat sat on the mat
The mat sat on the floor
The budgie's on the mantlepiece
The dog is by the door

I'm sitting in the armchair
Feeling ill at ease
The dog has started scratching
I think that He's got fleas

I take him in the bathroom
I put him in the tub
Run some lukewarm water
And give him a good scrub

I've got some doggy shampoo
It's really got some clout
It gets a real good lather
And the buggers all fall out

Rinse him off and dry him
And sit him by the heat
Go into the kitchen
And get him food to eat

Nearly time for sleep now
There's one thing that I dread
If the dog has still got fleas
Do I want him on the bed ?
