The Other Head in the Black Hills

It began to be carved in 1948
For completion there’s no date
Crazy Horse is the man’s name
Of the Lakota, he’s one of fame
When the villain Custer came to kill,
Crazy Horse, Custer’s guts did spill
Because Custer came with greed
“Both your land and gold I do need.”
He thought Crazy Horse would run
The Indian fought when under the gun
The battle was once “Custer’s Last Stand”
As if the boy general did something grand
Courage and determination were misread
Shortly, Custer and his troops all lay dead
If Custer, instead, had got his way
Thousands would have died that day
But is this carving the right thing to do?
Those who criticize are not just a few
And it continues to be hotly debated
Whether the hills are being desecrated
