   in the space between you and me,
      spoken words span the separate shores
         of our separate minds.


they are an artist's painting brush
   that tints and tinges the canvas
      of our points of view about ourselves,
         about the world.


and they are a sculptor's chisel
   carving and shaping our feelings,
      not just aimless oscillations
