Four Door Racer

Four-Door Racer

My daddy owned a four-door racing machine
Scared my mother to death when he lived out his dream
He loved to race at speeds known to few
Despite mother’s objection, that’s what he’d do

He’s shine and wax that racing car
In hopes that someday it would take him far
On the track is where he loved to be
Screams from the audience, he loved to see

Mom would be so nervous; she would close her eyes
Each time that dad would go racing by
And each time I’d hear her pray
To bring him safely back her way

But one-day mom’s worst fears were realized
When dad hit the wall, you could here the cries
I was too young to understand what was going on
Until I hear her cry that he was gone

A week later we laid him in the ground
With all his racing buddy standing around
I tried to comfort mom all I could
As frozen in front of his grave she stood

That was five years ago now, but it feels like yesterday
His racing car still in the garage in a permanent stay
Mom begs me never to go inside
But every so often I go and hide

Mom fears I’ll be just like him
She says she could never to through it again
But when I get behind the wheel of that racing car
My imagination tends to wonders far

Dreams of speed and the roar of the crowd
In my mind it sounds so loud
My daddy’s dreams passed down to me
When I’m older, a racer I’ll be
