Angel

I heard an angel
speak last night
and he said "write"

So I got up
out of bed
and began

to spin a tale
of those carved in stone
the beauty of it all

Looking down
upon the graves
their wings
entwined in ivy

Faithful and sad
flowers decorating
the white stone

A bird sings softly
behind it, sings
a haunting, beautiful melody

A tree arcs over the angel
dappling the marble
with shadowed leaves

And the swaying branches
send shafts of light
sparkling around her

And the angel herself
who faithfully sits
near the graves

Waiting, waiting
for the day the Lord
will return for her

The loneliness
echoed in her eyes
and her arms
stretched towards the heavens

With the delicate blooms
curling around her
the leaves overgrown

And then the bird behind her
flutters away
to sing again
another day
