Olindo Guerrini Biography | Poet

Olindo Guerrini was born at Forlì on 4 October 1845. Educated at Ravenna, Turin, and the University of Bologna, he developed into a poet of remarkable wit, emotional depth, and intellectual boldness. Though respected in academic circles, he became most widely known under the pseudonym Lorenzo Stecchetti, a literary identity through which he published many of his finest and most provocative poems.

Guerrini’s writing often blended irony, skepticism, and sensuality, reflecting the restless spirit of nineteenth-century Italian literature. In the preface to Nova Polemica, he openly declared, “Primo di tutto dice, non credo in Dio” (“First of all I say, I do not believe in God”), a statement that firmly associated him with secular and anti-clerical thought. Despite controversy surrounding his views, Guerrini earned recognition as a gifted poet whose works combined lyrical elegance with fearless independence of mind.
