Gustaf Fredrik Gyllenborg Biography | Poet

Gustaf Fredrik Gyllenborg, Count and man of letters, was born on 6 December 1731 and became an influential figure in the cultural life of eighteenth-century Sweden. A prominent supporter of literature and learning, he was among the earliest members of the Swedish Academy and later served as Chancellor of Uppsala University.

Gyllenborg devoted himself to poetry in many forms, producing satires, fables, odes, and reflective verse distinguished by elegance and Enlightenment refinement. Among his noted works was The Passage of the Belt, admired for its descriptive power and patriotic spirit. Philosophically, he leaned toward Deism, embracing reason and natural religion rather than strict theological orthodoxy. His writings reflected the intellectual currents of the Enlightenment, balancing literary grace with thoughtful skepticism. He died on 30 March 1808, remembered as both a cultivated poet and a patron of Swedish intellectual life.
