Show Them You Care
I did not choose my vocation; my vocation chose me. I was volunteering twenty-five hours a week in a middle school, teaching students. One day I was called into the guidance office. I thought I had done something wrong. I was full of excuses; afraid they were not going to let me volunteer any more. My heart was pounding in my chest. I was so uncomfortable. “Mrs. Krutsinger,” the man said, “Do you know what guidance counselors do?” “A lot of boring paperwork?” He smiled. “We do,” he agreed, “We are supposed to do what you do, but there is not time. You need to go back to school and become a guidance counselor.” He told me the school. He told me the town. He said I would be perfect for it. I’ve been a guidance counselor for 19 years now. It all started when a man cared enough to talk to me. A man who saw what was going on. A man who saw my talent. This all from a man whose name I do not remember. I’m not sure I had even met him before. Life is funny that way, so do what you love to do. Show everyone you care. Great things may happen.
