A Sad Christmas Memory
On Christmas Eve, year nineteen forty-three, at four years old and happy as can be, while tree lights bubbled on our Christmas Tree, I knew for sure that Santa I would see with special presents, he would bring to me. Since I'd been good, my mommy did foresee he planned to stop, come in, have cookies, tea, and share our Christmas Eve festivity. So Mom and Dad made me go to my room to change into my nightie, then resume to wait for Santa bells and sleigh to loom. But when I peeked into the next bedroom, the thing I saw filled up my heart with gloom- my uncle, wearing a Santa costume! And since that night, I figured to assume there is no Santa; make-believe, presume. For many years I faked to still believe; let Mom and Dad, their Santa story weave. Yet, part of me was always left to grieve- my Santa joys dissolved that Christmas Eve.
