The Crystal Tear
When newly fallen snow lays fresh and whisper-soft, The birds echo on snow-laden branches aloft. Gentleness envelops me in a generous calm, I lift up mine eyes, like in my favourite psalm. Until dazzled by white-glare I seek a retreat, But the expanse laid before me has not known feet. My pulses quicken for my heartbeat this excites, The covered land stretches ahead, beckons, invites Me, to step on, to leave my footprints there impressed, It’s a special moment when I feel truly blessed. My tread is firm, sure- footed and forward I walk, The silence is welcome and not broken by talk. The purity of whiteness stills my racing mind, The sun glints golden, peeps through the trees, I find I’m in awe of this visitor that dropped by night To blanket this plain field in deep virginal white, To transform usual into this moment rare, Overcome a tear trickles, not caused by cold air. I try to absorb, to savour what I’m feeling, This walk in the snow to me has been revealing. Emotions are running high as I look about, I look back across white carpet and there’s no doubt, It is the sheer beauty of this iced wintry scene Where my following tracks now show, that I have been Here. How often do I see any evidence? That my being alive has made a difference To my surrounding world, there’s no sight or sound That proves to others that I’ve been around. The tear that’s now a frozen crystal on my cheek Speaks louder than any words I can ever speak.
