Your Birthday
Your Birthday By Roy Merritt So today is your birthday another year gone by One more year older a thought to make one cry Another year upon the pile another year has left And another year you know you closing in on death And upon that time you not certain, not certain where and when But you know for sure it’s coming, coming to you in the end And once it does the years will pass, will pass come and go Without any notice by you, this you surely know Not by you or any of those who’ve come this very way The millions upon millions who’ve seen the light of day Those that dwell in darkness now and silence be all around As they mortify and turn to dust ‘neath some hallowed ground And you can be certain with little regard or doubt The numbers will grow and grow as if water from a spout Because Death it has a hunger, a hunger to increase the score He hungers for very many, hungers for many more And he knows this for sure he knows this indeed This day will come to you a day perhaps to bleed To bleed upon some wreckage perhaps of man made ways You upon that time to die and cease any future days Or disease will embrace you in its reliable course Will mount you upon its steed upon its fearsome horse And gallop forth forever and make you forever a slave Forever from now on chained down into the grave Perhaps to ponder the life you had and how this life you spent And how you lost your soul and wonder it went To wonder where it went wonder where it went
