Misery Loves Company
Misery Loves Company By Roy Merritt A somber vision was the person who stood at the bridge’s rail A person beset with sorrow he could surely tell Their face was full of anxiety their grief apparent, quite clear As they stood there at the railing and ever came closer near He could see they were contemplating to move forward to lunge To go over that railing and take a fateful plunge A plunge into the river so many feet below there down To impact with the water and beneath its waves to drown And as it would fill their lungs as they felt the abiding pain they would struggle toward the surface to breath the air again And their diminishing senses the fleeting thoughts repressed Would regret what they have done in a brief moment of distress And yet they knew it be this way when they woke upon this morn Determined this day to die the inevitable of those be born And soon they glance at him out of the corner of their eye Wondering if he comes this way to reason with them and suicide decry But that is not what he wants they soon enough to see That he is of the same mind as they for misery loves company And so being aware of this both having now recognized They equally despise this world and hate their wretched lives And so they grasp hands together and mount upon the rail Preparing to dive forthwith perhaps to the depths of hell And soon they go together into the empty space Filling the air as they plunge below as it buffets their tearful face And hopeful they are as beneath the waves they be That it washes them toward the ocean toward the cold and salty sea They know they to languish in death and those their bodies retrieve Will surely understand like all that misery loves company Misery loves company a passion that long has raged And not unknown to any man or unknown in any age It is the burden of the living the burden to repress make flee Lest it seal our doom for misery loves company Yes, oh yes, oh yes, misery loves company
