An Eye Pricked Through the Keyhole
I fall asleep in the east and awake in the west hemisphere of my brain My daydreams follow the smoke of nightmares I arrest in my ghost train At daybreak, I rise head beneath my bed to meet the monster’s eye Retreating into my tragic existence of a morbid mind in search of ‘I’ People are the broken mirrors in which I see myself reflected in between their cracks The tinted windows that equally display truth and just as easily go off these tracks Blind to who they truly are because in me, I too deflect their true images With my elusive gaze, absorb any light, assimilate to stimulate more empty pages The ghosts of my day continue, full steam ahead, to haunt my nights Of the pleasant conversations I’m, presently, politely engaged in gruesome fights The delayed reactions of the screams I bellow in absolute silence in my head at midnight That only I can hear, in my vertical bed, that only I can say to me, “Goodnight” Only to fall into a nightmare that was planted by an overcast daydream To the nest of crocodile and serpent eggs that hatch in my infested stream Out of my womb to bear the very thing that I fear the most as I drown To awake with crocodile tears running down my smiling face at the crack of dawn 10-22-2016 Halloween - Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Eve Roper
