The Vamp Who Chickened Out
Soft fingered winds caressed my neck Kissed my breast supine Brushed the tip of my nose Rolled my hair like twine. Tickled up and down my thigh Lightly touched my feet As I lay on my neighbor's hammock We share back yards on Yawning Street. And that is when and that is where A pale night lover came to me His eyes told tales of many past loves I listened all too willingly. Lost and prisoner to his will No jail could ever stronger be I focused only on his eyes Even when he bared his teeth. My blood of it's own accord Rushed wildly through my veins And disappointment claimed my soul When he drew back in raw disdain. With gentleman airs and a devil-may-care Flick of his wavy black cape He took to the air and left me to stare As he changed and made his escape. I rose from the swing, gathered my things In quick time and headed for home I still can't believe with desire unappeased That he'd left me and I was alone. It wasn't until I stood perfectly still In front of my patio doors That I realized his disdain was surmised From the thing all vampires deplore. Between my breast lay a gift from my ex Which I'd never ever remove Because of the cost (it's a gold plated cross) It held memories I'd rather not loose. And though I am sad; be it good be it bad This episode's reached a standstill And vampire or not I hope that he rots On the bed of some angry ant hills. RETA PRUITT September 16 2016
