The Marriage Rule
Living in a society with high and grounded morals I chose to break the rule and be single Scandalous! For a girl After all, the religious laws I do follow do be clear A girl shall be seen as a sinner and shall be denied Heaven If she chooses not to serve faithfully and submissively, her husband But a rule I broke, the familial When I did impose my choice to keep on being single Why, mind you, even as a single, I do engage not in the taboo I do love my religion, I do believe in it blindly I do love the promises it offers, the promises of liberation Of it keeping track of our actions for they do bear reactions But I do wish to assert my individuality I do wish to be acknowledged as a lover of poetry Of stories and of words In my duty, I do wish to even make my voice heard Pray, getting married out of love is for me impossible Love, once, on my heart beats did trample Getting married would be out of compulsion A mere consequence of a societal regulation But should I please this society Should I forsake my free time, should I sacrifice myself Should I, out of compulsion, serve a man and bear him children And let it all engrave on my body, scars, meant to remain?
