The First Kiss
Always a surprise That you want it, Kind of sneaks up on you, Even bigger surprise when you are kissed back, The feared face slap of precocious youth That I never experienced in my life time. But then for me A kiss was never just experimental, And foreshadowed a love That might last a lifetime, A kiss in my mind had integrity, Always meant something, Diaphanous specter of a promise, Raging hormones not withstanding! How like a kiss is the first poem given To the object of one’s affection, Feelings wrapped up like a present, Though some people lack this gifting. Still a smile carries a similar message, Intention witnessed to by angels Holy rolling tongue on fire, Ecstatic testimony of the soul and the libido In comparison How without borders is same-sex bonding, Though a kiss may or may not be lacking Gradually you see that bridges have been crossed Unnoticed by both men and women, And space reserved for the other in your heart! Of necessity, in that sacred space, There can be no favorites, Though disciples jockey for position. Love is the only language spoken here, And weather is always temperate, Every soul is naked in that light, Basking all day long in rays of smile. Brian Johnston January 21, 2016
