1 Shot
1 shot leads to another And before you know it You are 2, 20 shots in Falling and stumbling Into his arms As he slurs obscene words Into your ears But instead of running. You giggle. Not worrying about the monster That lies beneath But you don’t care As this becomes your Saturday night Every Saturday night And soon enough your Saturday Will creep into Sunday And continue through the week This is how the beast got her Alcoholism gripping my best friend Twisting her into a shell of her former self Soon fun nights out Turned into comforting her as she got sick Weekends with the girls Turned into agonizing hospital visits Where she destroyed her liver And I worried if she would survive the night Eventually she realized that she was A hazard to her health And we got her the help she needed I started going to AA meetings with her I cried when she shared the story of her first binge And celebrated when she told every success story I thought she was cured I thought this was the new her Every AA chip she received was a small victory A reminder that she conquered the beast Unfortunately the fight didn’t last long With her 1 year chip sitting on the coffee table Surrounded by her old friends of Jose and Jack She has retreated back into the downward spiral of her destruction And I wonder if she remembers me The girl who gave her, her first drink
