My Monsters
The boogeyman has never bothered me. I shut my eyes at night to go to sleep.. If he should be about, he’s let me be! No monsters in my closet do I keep! I know some witches, but they have no broom. They look like anybody on the street. A few have bothered me, but they don’t loom As threats to me, and sometimes they act sweet. I keep my distance from them when I can. Another kind of monster I can see Seems not a threat to woman or to man. Those zombies mainly scare us on TV! In haunted places folks are seeing ghosts, And mediums are speaking with the dead. A demon would be scarier than most! Imagine wrestling those jerks in your head! I cannot think of any monster I Can claim as mine; I guess symbolically are some I know that make me want to cry! One brings along with him anxiety. He whispers in my ear when times are tough, But I’ve no fear he’ll make me ache or bleed. He laughs at me when I don’t have enough Of time or money that I think I need. Another monster carries with him pain. Sometimes he visits me out of the blue, And though invisible, he is so grim He makes me feel there’s nothing I can do. I cannot shake him off when pain is great. Sometimes strong aspirins can make him go, But other times, I have to wait and wait To see him leave; oh, my, he can be slow! One monster I have known most of my life. His name is Melancholy. Sometimes fear Accompanies him when he comes with strife. I feel his presence more each passing year. So zombies, witches, ghosts and boogiemen Might be out in the world, for all I know, But monsters I deplore come to me when I let hope falter. Then my monsters grow!
